Rielly - Keeper, #2 D.

Hainsey - Old, not part of the future so he doesn't matter.

Zaitsev - Terrible contract, not living up to it right now. Should be traded if possible.

Gardiner - High risk player, pending UFA, might need to be traded if not replaced or re-signed to a good deal.

Dermott - Part of the future, needs more time to develop, possible top-4 D.

Polak - poop, get rid of him.

Carrick - Still young enough to develop a bit more, cheap, worth keeping a bit longer.

Need a legit #1 D, preferably RHD and 25 or under.

Need two more top-4 D, preferably one who can score (if Gardiner is to be replaced) and another one who can at least skate, pass and defend (to replace Zaitsev).

There's a lot of work to be done on the blueline, hopefully the Leafs have at least another one or two top-4 D in the system in the form of Liljegren, Dermott, Rasanen and Nielson. But there doesn't seem to be a legit #1 RHD in the system and it's a big need, one that would be worth the price of paying.

AHH- CRAP! I flagged you rather than quoted you. But worst of all, I forgot what I was going to say........ probably for the best.

EDIT -- Oh, Do you think there is a future for Gardiner in Toronto?

the question is who.

i'm thinking carlsson could be getting +$8M. that's a non-starter for me.

trade is going to cost us.

As per the last thread, not drafting Bure, Federov and Konstantinov had nothing to do with our scouts or GM.

Ballard hated the USSR.

He would never allow a Russkie to be drafted.

That reminds me: what ever happened to Lupul?

Didn't we have him under contract or something?

Yes but only at 5 million or less a year and only if he plays less than 20 min a night.

Gardiner is effective if he's used correctly. He is not a #1 D and should not be played like one. Gardiner struggled because he was used incorrectly.

Imagine using a screwdriver like a hammer. It won't end well.

Guy was an awesome hockey player, who was robbed of his career by that crooked douchebag Lou Lamoriello.

Or at least that's what I will say when Lou goes to the Islanders.

I wasn’t criticizing. He was just the first Russian player drafted I could think of.

I didn't like the idea of signing Carlson but if the Leafs trade Gardiner and Zaitsev, I don't have a problem paying him 8 million anymore because they'd have cleared 10+ million in salary and have a few young guys that will be on their ELC for the next few years.

That being said, Carlson isn't a #1 D who would be getting paid like one and who would be signed into his mid 30s. I don't like that but it depends on who they can clear out to make the numbers work.

What about Lidstrom? Salming turned out pretty good albeit he was only a Leaf because Ballard was in jail at the time.

Point still stands; have to start hitting some home runs at the draft.
