Why can't they just make it unsportsmanlike conduct? Clearly licking someone's face violates the spirit of the rule. Is the rule book that inflexible as to give no discretion to the officials?
I remember times before a faceoff and things were on the verge of kicking off, usually late in games, the referees would give a preemptive 10 minute misconduct. So clearly they do have some discretion; why not use it, twice, in that case? |

It's instigation plain and simple and one stiff upper cut to the pest's jaw while he's doing it will stop it, he won't have a tongue anymore. |

Sure and then you get suspended for a sucker punch, it might be lower due to mitigating circumstances, but you can't throw a punch with your glove on and dropping your glove to throw a punch on an unsuspecting player gets you a handful of games.
I'm not saying I disagree, I think that would stop the behavior, but he skates(no pun intended) and you get the suspension.

I use sticky traps for catching centipedes, flies, ants, and other bugs around my house. I keeping thinking how much I would like to see Marchand's tongue (and beak) stuck to one.
The really bad thing about Marchand is that he the type of player he is but yet at the same time, played on the first line of Canada's World Cup team with Crosby and Bergeron, two of the most elite players in the world. One would thing that playing with those two at the same time would increase his respect for the game and its players. He is really an embarrassment to the entire country. |

Because as the other guy said the licking would make him the instigator, hence the punch would not be a sucker punch. |

If the league had any balls, they should have suspended Marchant AND Cassidy the 2nd time he did that. What is the difference between spitting and licking?
Where is the players union in this issue? They would save 1 player over the 600+ players in the union? All the players should stike over it, until the union is forced to remove Marchant from membership. |

I understood what he was saying, hence the: "it might be lower due to mitigating circumstances". But saying "he started it!" isn't usually an excuse for your mom when you're 10. "Instigator" in hockey has a very narrow meaning. It would be an unprecedented situation, that's for sure. |

Let’s not forget how the Charlestown Chief won their Federal League title, Ned Braden stripping.
Maybe Marchand was just trying to ‘win one’ for the Bruins. |
