Steve, go back and read experts opinions on the first round. To say "nobody" picked the Sharks to beat the Ducks is flat out wrong. Come on, you're better than that.

Curious, why is the future of the Sharks brighter than the Ducks or Kings?
I'm open-minded, but you'll have to make an argument, because from where I'm sitting the Sharks are very thin on prospects, thinner than both the Ducks and Kings, who aren't exactly well stocked with futures but in my mind Sharks prospect pool is bottom 5.
Is the argument cap space? That could make sense, and would be true if you lure Tavares, but free agency signings are rarely the best return value-wise.

Don’t forget Hertl is a RFA now & Kane is a FA. Some other team offers Hertl a boat load of coin and Kane leaves then where are the Sharks. I don’t think Doug has the guts to try and sign Tavares, I would try to get John Carlson from Washington, I believe he is a FA, then move Burns back to wing. If another team offers Hertl a boat load of coin, the Sharks will be compensated in 1st round picks.

The Sharks would be insane not to resign Kane. He stepped right in and fit well with the Sharks.

Please don't resign Ward or Martin. Get rid of them both.
While we're at it - let hansen walk. Keep burns on defense.

If thornton returns - he owes us a home town discount. $8M and he sits

Burns for future considerations.

Also, please sign Kane. Thanks.

I think a huge thing to take away is just how well Hertl played these last two series. He was making chances left and right. Kane, fits in very well and I think would be a bonus to sign (obvious maybe). But Couture and Hertl really did all they could. It was impressive to see how many big plays those two were involved in.

Also, to that comment above, I'd love Burns on the wings, but I think all of SJ would revolt for that package haha.

But then the Sharks are back to square 1 waiting for the picks to develop. And they may get a dud or 2..

Thornton’s coming back on another 1 year deal at a bit of a pay cut. Sharks have plenty of space to make runs at Tavares/EK and re-signing Kane if they choose to. Joe wants to come back and will for cheap. I’d expect he either waits till Tavares/EK get sorted out to see what cap situation is or just signs early for cheap.

Still say it was a mistake bringing back Thornton instead of Marleau. But no reason to bring him back this year. Kids filled his place just fine and he will only make the Sharks slower in s faster league. Kane needs to be re-signed, thought he was solid for the Sharks and fit in well right away. They got the space to do it especially if they don’t bring back Thornton.

Marleau didn't come back because he was getting a third year at $6,25mm at Toronto and it would raise havoc with the Cap for future dollar needs for Pavs and Couture amongst others. He had the same amount of points this year as last and was -1.

Any offer sheet for Hertl would be above $5.5mm and less than $7.5mm. Doug resigns him unless it gets above the $6.5 range and then he gets a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Barkov should be the comparison for Hertl and he is only getting $5.9mm for 4 more years plus he scored a lot more than Tomas so he sin't going anywhere.

LAKings is correct, the Barracuda don't have a lot of prospects to immediately help next year, save maybe Balcers. But wait a couple of years after that.

Here's some things for Doug to consider: Re-Sign Eric Fehr to a 1 year contract for $1mm. He played great and solidified the 4th line. He did better than Goodrow. You know that Jumbo is coming back. He was willing to take $4mm last year to accommodate Patty but when that didn't happen he got $8mm. Sign him for $3mm for 1 year. Re-sign Tierney for 3 years for $2mm AAV or less. He deserves a raise but not above $2mm. Re-sign DeMelo for $1.3mm for two years. We have Heed ready and available. For whatever reason DeBoer doesn't like him but he has talent.
Hertl gets 6 years at $5.5mm for above mentioned reasons. Sign Tavares for $10mm and Kane for no more than $7mm. He has had injury issues in the past and living in the Bay Area provides other temptations for any Alden Smith type behavior to reappear.

If you aren't successful in obtaining Tavares and/or Kane, go after John Carlson and sign him for a Vlasic contract. Sign JVR for $6.5mm. Since the Caps will need a D Man, trade Burns to them for Backstrom. Caps have young centers and will miss him less and we can use Backstrom to replace Jumbo. Plus Carlson is a right shot, younger than Burns, scores at a 1/3 of a point a game less than Burns, and actually plays D in his own zone: a concept that is often foreign to Burns.
