They never won a game outside the 2nd round with Martin in the top 4... - MattStrat
Different forward group/coach/system.
Still a handy top 4 group. |

Good call. That was solid, although Orpik was already really bad. - Victoro311
Yes the years of cheap - sorry, years of hitting started to take its toll. Thank goodness the Caps didn't realise! |

Speaking of which, has Gibbons played both games with the Devils? Looks like staying away from Grabner was a blessing in disguise although again, tough to compare. |

I think this is the deepest forward group the Pens have had in the Crosby/Geno era. - j.boyd919
That's what i keep hearing people saying, but I was definitely much more confident in the 4th line when Cullen was running it. But Lines 1-3, for sure stronger. Just the 4th I think is weaker. |

I think its also by far the best top 4 D we've had in the Crosby-Malkin Era. I don't really remember how good/bad it was when we had Gonch, Gogo, Orpik, and Scuds all in their prime and a rookie Kris Letang, but since I've been seriously watching the Pens, this kicks the crap out of any defense we've had. - Victoro311
Yeah I could probably agree with that too. |

I dunno, Sheahan>Cullen IMO, Kuhnackl was on both lines, the other difference is ZAR instead of Wilson/Rowney and I think ZAR could put up 6 points by this playoffs end. |

Haha I havent even looked at it yet. Is it really that bad? Seem to remember people around here saying it was going to be a good one this summer... - MattStrat
Well I think it really depends on what your team is going to look for.. there is some top talent in Tavares, Carlson, JVR, Kane, etc. But I think after the guys who are gonna get paaaaaid.. it gets to be a little slim. |

I bet they are proud of those vapid comments. Right up there with Ron Cook's: "The Pens will miss Ryan Whitney" knee-jerk moment.
FYI: Sports writers are simply fans (some not even fans) with journalism degrees. Most of them never even played sports at any level let alone pro or semi-amateur and nothing they say of personal opinion typically holds any weight. I mean; look at Ek. |

I think this year's team is much better all around than last year's team aside from not having a Murray/Fleury tandem.
The biggest overall difference from last year to this year is not so much the Pens, but the quality of opponents. Boston and Tampa are juggernauts and aside from the regular season Champs last year, the Pens had an easier road than they will this year. |

Top 30 scorers in UFA this summer.
Just5, who could the Flyers be interested in? I know they have a decent amount of cap space this summer. |

but the first cup run was Cullen/Fehr/Kuhn, which is a pretty sick 4th. Last years was pretty bad though Cullen/wilson/rowney mixed in with sheary and Guentz when they were playing terrible so they were no help...wasn't Kuhn injured most of the playoffs last year though? |

Thats why I'm a little hesitant to say stronger than 2016...because while the roster might be a bit stronger on paper, the cohesiveness and buzzsawness isnt quite there. Though I do see signs of it at times. - MattStrat
Yeah, that 2016 team had serious chemistry like HBK, not to mention how Letang was playing v today so I liked their chances better.
It was also a weaker field, there are a lot if really good teams this year. In 2016 it felt like if they got past Washington they should win.
On paper this team is loaded. PK group and back up goalie are the main areas I think we're weaker. But they just haven't quite lived up to their talent even though it's still a good team. |

Well he does have a BA in journalism from Glassboro State (Rowan), so that accounts for something right? Haha, I jest...it doesn't mean squat. I don't think there's a writer out there who's opinion I give two F's about. They are all are experts at eating crow and deflecting dumb comments.

You have those guys plus the possibilities of guys like Karlsson, Doughty, OEL getting traded and there are some serious game changers, more than usual. Depth drops off a ton but there is a potential for massive power shifts this off-season. |

Yeah, he is very humble about everything and self-depreciating, so I can't hate on him (anymore). I think he's just happy he had the chance to play in the NHL with some good players and had an opportunity to play for the cup that last full season. Like Army, he's a good guy. |

He played 11 games, Rowney and Wilson had 20 each. Yeah Kuhn-Cullen-Fehr was alright. I don't think they were anything special though. I think all 3 years 4th lines are comparable. |
