Jay Greenberg: Not Such a Bad Format Afterall

While I still wish they would eliminate the brackets and make it so the lowest available seed always plays the highest available seed, (with division winners being 1 and 2) I am still excited about this series for a multitude of reasons.

Great piece and spot on as always, Jay!

The current Flyer/Pens rivalry really does remind me of the wars with the Rags in the 80s, and those were a lot of fun!!

Yup, with you on both the format and in looking forward to this series! The only teams really screwed by the format this year are Boston and Toronto. Having the 2nd and 3rd best teams in the conference playing in the first round is just a waste.

Fantastic piece.

I know most fans of all things puck are most excited about this playoff matchup, regardless of who their favorite teams are.

There would be equally good matchups if it were 1 to 8 rankings for the playoffs

Tampa vs NJ
Boston vs Columbus
Wash vs Philly
Toronto vs Pitts

Nash vs Col
Vegas vs LA
Winterpeg vs SJ
Minny vs Ana

All this does is water down the later rounds which makes for less compelling matchups when it matters more. The only difference is this screws a lot of teams over who should have home ice advantage or create uneven rounds and easier paths for bad teams.

1 v 8 is far less contrived.
