@BHTVeric

The #Blackhawks and Jan Rutta have agreed to terms on a one-year contract extension.

Why is StanBo rushing to sign these bottom pairing D men before the offseason? I don't get it, unless he is sure there are no upgrades available.

Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports the deal is worth $2.25MM.

Well, time to start complaining about his cap hit.

He wants the built in excuse "we don't have any roster spots available to sign anyone else". "We like our team".

He's the second most productive UFA defenseman under the age of 30 available this year.

It's John Carlson and then him.

Pretty bleak out there.

You might not be too far off, unless he plans to package some of these guys in a deal:

The Blackhawks have Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, Connor Murphy, Jan Rutta, Erik Gustafsson & Jordan Oesterle signed next season for a combined cap hit of $20,363,462.

ETA: Stan has now basically signed all of the players we have this year and there is a agreement almost universally that our D sucked and was primary reason for our record this season.

Yes, points.

The not being great at defense is probably why his contract is so cheap for a defenseman scoring at a 36 point pace.

When did questioning decisions, contributions to the team etc. automatically equate to "hate?" Notice that a lot on here and I doubt very much anyone hates any of our team, outside of Goalie 33's despising of one Patrick Kane.

Anyway, Q has always been seen as a player's coach - someone who left players alone outside of his shorter- and less frequent-than-most practices. In the PR video where players were asked to talk about why they love playing for Q, most mentioned these things. Yet, when the roster was asked by Powers to name their most influential coach(es), only two players - Saad and Seabrook - named Q and Seabs named almost all of his coaches. Really depends on if you think the former outweighs the latter in getting most out of a team. I'm sure there is an ideal balance.

What Toews was noted for are those dreaded "intangibles" that many seem to think are not valuable. I'm not one of those people. I've been very happy to see him rebound these past few games now that he is playing with Kane again. Hoping the trend continues.

Forever grateful for what both brought to the team these past 10 years.

Don’t know how much credibility this Article has as it lists Ulf Samuelson as 3rd in the Assistant Coach who should be a Head Coach category. I’m thinking this should properly be a much higher number say Infinity.

I would be okay with 2 years on those $ but not just one year. Maybe the correct details are still to come, but if this is so it is an overpay and waste of our precious Cap $.

Hard to believe 1 year ago Hocks were number one team in the West. Who would have thought they would crash so hard in that short of time. When you make those summer trades I guess it was expected but just Wow. Panarin was basially gifted to you and Bowman feels he wasn't worth keeping? He should be let go for that alone.

Question now becomes can you make the playoffs in the next 5 years? 50:50 odds on that. But at least Ryan Seabrook will still be under contract to help in 2023-

Hartman with his second game winner Tuesday. That may be a gift to the Preds that keeps giving

Haha. So true. I hate the trend of small, puck-moving blueliners.

Can we get some bigger, stay-at-home, true Defensmen in the mix again, please!

When Francis got shown the door I thought about Darling. How many hockey people would have predicted his continued struggles? Some may have said he might struggle for awhile transitioning to a new team and a new role as #1 but maybe not. Few if any would have predicted Darling just failing.

Nobody expected this.

The thinking was that his numbers were so good that even if he regressed, he'd be average.

He's been abysmal, but there's hope that maybe he can make a comeback. The weight of the contract may have been too much for him.

He had a big blow to his personal life soon after the trade was announced - his engagement ended (was supposed to get married last summer). Not sure if this would have thrown him off as much as we've seen, but never know.

Do you get the impression that StanBo only believes that there is a possibility of Cap overpayment with a huge contract? That he simply does not understand that if you sign 6 players on smaller contracts overpaying each of them by $500,000.00 you have still wasted 3M in precious Cap space. Now, I am assuming he does understand the math which makes the contracts look even more suspect.

Nothing I grew. Novel thought, 1 yr @ 2.25 might be tempting to a cap cellar dweller team this summer.
