I don't get the extension for Gus, either. Would love to hear from a professional evaluator why this signing makes sense.

I'm not a professional evaluator but I do play one on TV.
You must mean Q's psychiatrist don't you, because I think he/she will have to explain why doing the same thing again ISN'T insanity.

Rundblad II

I rest my case.

Seriously, the guy is turning 26 soon. How much more Improvement is there at this point?

Just like with Rundblad -- it's either a very sick inside joke by Q and his coaching staff (can you hear the South Park snickering now -- "hehe, hehe, let's play Gus all the time like we did Rundblad so Stan will think we like him and he'll re-sign him just like he did with David")

OR

He was taken at "face value" by Stan -- playing Gus all the time, sitting Kempny. Signal to Stan to dump Kempny for whatever he could get and re-sign Gus.

It's the only thing that makes sense in this once-again insane move.

HTF is this club going to get better by having an AHL-level defenseman up on the big club?

Q has seen the quality of his dry cleaning go up 5 fold since Gus started taking Q's clothes to the new cleaners. And the quality of Gus' car detailing is up ten-fold over Kempny, who refused to detail each time Q press-boxed him.

Q is quite happy now.
He's also teaching Gus what he likes at Binny's so that's a big bonus too.

I had thought Gus was called up to showcase for a possible trade or for internal assessment. I get trading Kempny if he was not signing here again. I wasn't sold on Kempny, either, anyway.

Well, he didn't get traded -- and if for assessment, then the assessor should be fired. If that's Blowman, then good riddance. 2nd time is a charm with him -- Rundblad II.

And yes, no way Kempny would have re-signed here with the treatment he got from Q. Just another in a long, getting longer, line of guys Q has put his stamp of disapproval on. Kempny more talented and athletic than anyone currently playing D on this club. Did he make mistakes? Sure. Let me know how his compares with #2's gaffes, especially since January.

Q's won 3 cups but he has seen fit by his actions to sabotage even the best moves that have been made. Time to reboot both Q and Blowman and maybe even further up the food chain. Not a ton of years left on the "core" -- for some, they are past their sell-by date but could still provide something for the right coach and assemblage of roster.

Sitting back and looking at it more, I'm not hating this Gustafsson deal too much.

He might be a guy who nets 20-25 points (Scoring at a 26 point pace in his first 60 career games) from the blueline and help the Powerplay. He isn't gonna be the one they put out there on the Dzone draws to shut anyone down, but considering more changes are likely to happen, it isn't the worst deal.

He has had some rough moments but also the goalies haven't exactly been stellar either. He looks smarter with the puck and more mobile than someone like Rundblad was, but obviously he has his flaws too.

He could flop and they could bury most of his salary, so meh. This isn't a deal that will make or break the team.

I have gone back and forth on whether a breakup with Q is necessary. I see a lot of comments on Ulf's D schemes, it kind of reminds me of the Barry Melrose era Kings. Does it make us miss Mike Kitchen?

The cap era is hard. I call it the parting gift from Bill Wirtz that keeps on giving. Fly too close to the cap ceiling and the wings melt. That's what happens in the cap era. And yes, I understand that Hossa is a Red Wing for life if there's no cap.

Couple things:
- I'm not a fan or anything, but signing Gus is really not that big of a deal. he can be buried for virtually no penalty, and he is a very good AHL'er.
- If he keeps progressing the way he has, Hayden is going to be a big contributor next year (points and presence).
- (news flash) Fixing the D and goaltending will be the two biggest concerns this offseason. At least one top four d-man and a "solid" back-up is a requirement.
- I wouldn't bank on any major contract movement this offseason.

All you have to do is go re-watch the San Jose game and that should tell you all you need to know about both Gustafson and Dahlstrom. He is not good so why sign a not very good NHL dman to a 2 year extension at double his current salary? I simply don't see the logic, at all.

Kempny was traded more than anything else because he had brain cramps, poor decisions, or wasn't sure what to do. He had not improved since day one. Does this make him worse than the other poor choices among younger guys, namely Oesterle, Gustafsson, Dahlstrom..Honestly they are all about the same, which is not good.
But your singling out Kempny is ok at first, but then you get.carried away. Obviously both Q and Bowman have their favorites. And saying that, i think it is also they want to see the dmen after certain things have transpired in their game.

Gustafson is better now, smarter with puck. Just going to toss this out....so as you and i might catch one way how Bowman may think

Gus was AHL all star. Was he playing this badly in Rockford? Why, why not. Has something to do with quality of partner/pair and teamates on ice in five man units. Under Colliton in AHL Gus is not the bad Gus we see in NHL. Could Gus be much better with a better NHL cast. Better is yes, much better probably not.
Yet with his strengths he is the type player with skill set to retain under Samuelson method. As that 6th dman or depth

Colliton has said that Dahlstrom thinks the game well, makes good plays. Alright, you know about Oesterle offensive ability. And between these three i say one minimal, two max will get moved. When?

When it is clear Seabrook comes in next fall in same or worse shape. You know he may not be able to play the same due to skating irregardless if he was in better physical shape entering camp. He represents the physical type dman, so one of the others we discuss here might depart in favor of a tough physical version type.

It is not like i am in love with any of these last to use dmen. I agree with what wiz told me: They hope Dahlstrom can play as third pasir and the others will improve. That is what they are hoping to see and yheir opportunity to hang on next year might be determined by how they progress in development this season

He has issues, but he has assets as well. If he is used in an offensive role he can contribute. It might not work out, but not the worst deal for the $$$.

I think he's got a chance to be decent defensively, I just wish he would not bite and go to the boards, he's got to become discipline and stay between the forward and the goalie

Beginning to wonder is that how slow his thought process has become, boy that would explain a lot.
