There are some pretty substantive barriers impeding NHL support for NCAA programs that do not exist with the CHL. That's an apples and oranges comparison. NCAA players need to pay their own way to NHL developmental camps or they lose their amateur status, for example.

I think he was talking about more substantive compensation. Like with Terry Pegula giving $10M? To Penn state to help get their D1 team off the ground.

Edit: I was just a little off, it was $102M.

NFL, NBA and MLB don't compensate the NCAA. Why should the NHL?

here's a thought... how about the NCAA pay its own players? considering it makes like 10 billion dollars a year. Why should the NHL pay?

NCAA also doesn't allow players drafted into the NFL or NBA to play for them. Doesn't do NHL any good to mirror that relationship.

NCAA hockey doesn't make 10 billion a year, there is a reason places like Penn needed outside investment to afford having a team.

NCAA makes billions off all student athletes. They can afford it.
When the NCAA cleans up any mess they have & changes amateur restrictions then maybe & thats a very loose maybe at that. Promote televised hockey more.

Why can NCCA players not compete in all preseason play?
Loosen up on that silly restriction & it will draw more attention to them & the resulting PR would benefit their coffers.

Sure, but 99% of that money is from football and basketball.

Let's say you make $1,000 a week. And $5 of that is from taking your pop cans and bottles back to get the deposit. You're not going to invest in getting more bottles and cans.

I am probably in the minority here but I think college sports in general are wrong, whether hockey, football, basketball, etc. The whole purpose of going to college is to further one's education, not to play or cheer for sports teams (who in many cases have people on them who should not even be in college). If you take away the education and research that colleges do they have lost the reason for existence. On the other hand, if you take away their sports teams they would get along just fine and many would be better off.

I like the junior league system that Canada has for hockey much better. If a young player rises to the CHL level he can focus on hockey only. If he is good enough to play in the NHL level he can reach the NHL without having to deal with college. If not, he can always go to college later and/or have a minor league career.

I hope that the spirit of what you are saying Paul is true.

yes, the NHL, and the NBA, NFL and MLB should all support college sports development.

and US College players could be considered and treated like junior players in Canada.

drop the artificial behaviors and barriers.

let junior aged kids chose between US College or pros after highschool.

Would be interesting to see how many undiscovered Canadian kids suddenly show up on US college rosters.
