I agree whole heartily on your Dumoulin arbitration assessment. I've been saying since last off season he would remain cheap for us because his one bit of leverage as a RFA would go badly for him if he decided to file for arbitration. I simply see no world in where Dumo gets more than 3 mil from arbitration. He doesn't excel at what defensemen get paid for. His only argument is "I play with Letang sometimes".

Yep. I hope to god he's lower than 3m. That would be so god damn solid for the Pens.

Doesn't matter that much this year. Seems like we are ok with cap. Maybe inseason pro-rating helps at deadline.

Very happy to see someone connecting the better Staal brother to the Pens, a much better fit as our 3C at a far better cap hit. Sorry Jordan, your time with us was fun, but it's over. Eric has been my top choice all summer but MN would be foolish to move him on such a friendly contract.

Folks, I'm heading to the Steelers game on Nov. 16th. Looking for a place to stay that's within travel distance to the game (will take the train, so hotel needs to be near a stop). I saw a Holiday Inn Express at Greentree (I believe) that seems to work. If I stayed there, would I be able to get to the stadium easily?

There have been endless scenarios presented by Pens fans that include moving Maatta in a package for a forward, usually Duchene. My question is, who are we expected to replace him with? Our blue line is far thinning than our forward corps, even with our hole at 3C. I suggest leaving Maatta out of your scenarios. Pouliot is a more likely trade chip, and I'd be happy to move Sheary in a package for a depth C. We have an abundance of upcoming young forwards that could fit into his role for a fraction of the price. Most of us would look good on 87s wing, and I can't even shoot without falling down.

Look for hotels in Station Square/South Side, then take the ferry across the river to the game. Gateway Clipper I believe its called. A great way to experience a game.

As nice as it would be to land Duchene, I don't see it happening. Colorado isn't going to trade him now. I don't think they know what the hell they're doing. Either that or their asking price is way too high.

I wish like hell Matt Cullen would make up his mind. He was great for Pittsburgh, and they could really use him now that Bonino is gone. One more year would be perfect. The market isn't overflowing with decent 3C talent. I would rather give him the money then to trade away the farm for Duchene or worse.

I keep hoping GMJR will pull a rabbit out of his hat, and sign/trade for a player like Cullen. An under appreciated center that will take off in the penguins system. The waiting for a 3rd line center is brutal.

Agree big time with this. Although there aren't many hotels on the South Side, other than the Sheraton. Taking the boat around the point and to the North Shore for the game is a great experience. Also, the south side is plentiful with good bars and eats. Although they can't serve booze till 11am. I've done this myself several times and can attest. Usually at Bar Louie till 30 mins prior to kickoff. Boat ticket is also cheap, 4$ I think.

Cullen waited until early August to announce his return last summer, and the longer the wait continues this summer, I'm expecting he returns to the Pens on another 1 year deal. I feel if he was retiring, he would've known by now and made an announcement. This is entirely uninformed wishful thinking, but I do see him as our 4C again this season. His loss would be bigger than Bonino/Daley/Kunitz, IMO.

Last year at this time I would have been okay if Cullen retired. I figured there's no way he could have a season like that again at his age...and he could go out on top. Then, last year happened, and while he looked fatigued in the regular season, his postseason was as strong as ever.

I don't want to make that same mistake again...I hope he comes back.

We always stay at the William Penn when we go to Pens games and stayed there when we went to the game at Heinz in February. There is a train stop right across from the Hotel and was easy to get the train across the river to the stadium.

William Penn has multiple restaurants/pub in it and you can usually get a good deal with pre-booking rooms far in advance.

Eric Staal is a terrible choice that shows no foresight into the future. He is at very best a one year bandaid and then they will have to spend more assets next year on a new 3C. Getting anyone over the age of 25 is a bad idea. Karlson or Lindberg from Vegas are still very good options to fill the void. Both are young and have cap hits just over a million and won't cost a ridiculous amount to acquire. Which one you target depends on what you value more offense or defense. But the idea should be long term fit. If they don't work out at 3C they both would make phenomenal 4Cs.

He's signed for 2 more seasons at only 3.5 per. Had 65 points last year. Captained a cup winner before. Plays a very sold 200 foot game.

Terrible choice? No. Not one bit.

As for the other guys you mentioned, I'd totally be down with acquiring either of those guys.

Out of curiosity what was your feelings about Bonino? Would you have wanted to keep him at 4 mill per? how about the same as Staal at 3.5 per?

Maatta is more of a midpairing guy, not really a top pairing as of today. Pens have a few of those in Dumo and Cole, Hunwick will slot nicely into the bottom pair. Maybe DP finally does something this season? Maatta could be replaced with a cheaper Franson. They're essentially the same player, just Maatta is way younger. Pens live and die by the forwards, and further stacking the forwards is going to give the Pens a higher probability of success.

I don't know if Eric is "better" than Jordan. He is a better scorer, but Jordan is the better defender and much better at faceoffs. I think Jordan is a better fit for what the Pens need. And like you say, why would Minnesota move him? I think Carolina is more likely to move Jordan - he would be my top choice.
