They should absolutely trade him. Losing Backes and Brouwer for nothing hurt, and losing Shattenkirk for nothing will hurt even more. The Blues know they cannot afford to re-sign him and they could get at least a first round pick for him.

Sign him and trade forwards in the off season .Assuming he wants to sign

Might be able to move him to a team to get them to the cap floor but that's about it

You can't just say we lost Backes and Brouwer for nothing.

It simply doesn't make sense to say "This playoff team should trade UFA's for assets and this other playoff team should trade assets for UFA's"

The Blues might not have made it through the first round last year without those 2 guys.

Maybe you should have asked Jason.....you know, the guy that covers the Blues here.

The Blues have been the same team for some time- never really good enough to contend with the heavyweights of the west I don't think Yeo in charge changes that.

The obvious problem is that Petro, Parayko and Shattenkirk are all right-handed shots.

This just shows how little people outside of St. Louis actually pay attention to the Blues. Elliott was traded at the draft for a 2nd & a conditional 3rd, to the Flames (aka THE TEAM TODD CORDELL COVERS FOR THIS SITE)
That 2nd rounder was used on Jordan Kyrou, who's currently 4th in the CHL in scoring,is leading Sarnia in scoring by 30 points over the next player, & is currently on a 21 game point streak.

So there are 90 #1 defensemen in the NHL. Wow.

Shatty is a legit 2nd pair guy who happens to be a PP specialist. Not great defensively.

He will get traded.

I hope they expose Bouwmeester or buy him out (probably never happen). We will not be signing Shattenkirk to a contract unless we trade Petro or Parayko, which if we did that we better be getting something BIG in return. Basically he is gone at the deadline for a pick and hopefully a rental forward.

There is no space for him and we have tons of D prospects in the AHL...

Stupid illogical thinking by most of the pundits.

How about this? Perhaps if you are heading to the play offs you think what kind of player can I add to my team and what would the cost be and only seek a deal where you would get a greater return than that?

Brouwer had a good play offs and a mostly terrible regular season. He was essentially a rental for a year and cap soace the next.

Backes would have stayed but wanted more years first off and a bit more money than the likely few productive years he has left. But hell yes you would trade for him at the deadline so if you are a contender why would you trade him? That makes no logical sense. I mean if you are two wins from the finals I assume we can consider such a team a contender?
