There should be like a 5 year minimum on these tribute videos. Maybe they couldn't find enough highlights to make a video.

Very well written article and for an outsider was extremely helpful to understand the situation.

The Blue Jackets were right to not give Ryan Johansen a video tribute

I'll be honest, I really liked RJ , he was the long franchise first line center this team needed and would loved to see what he could of done with another prodigal son flanking him on the wing in rick nash.

I was even the first on these boards to throw a stone at management , that being said , I have reason to believe the whole contract fiasco with RJ was fuelled by his agent (who did the same stunt with Trouba btw) , I don't blame him . He was fun to watch , what him and Foligno brought to this franchise is renewal , a change from the same rhetoric of busted prospects and hopeless seasons where players would just play in the hopes of salvaging their careers and moving on elsewhere .

I would of given rj his tribute video, the organisation really dropped the ball on this one and shame on them if they got held hostage by torts , the fans liked him and his heart was in the community and team...

Could have gone halfway with an announcement before the game a picture up on the scoreboard with some highlight information read off... But the whole league has gone a bit overboard with the videos.

Video tributes are needless. That player is no longer with the team, therefore he is the enemy now.

Tributes by former teams should only be done when said player retires

This is similar to the Kessel's return to Toronto. There was no tribute there either when he consistently performed for them. I think the Leafs messed up big time on that part by giving Phaneuf a tribute video and not Kessel. But it is what it is, some airhead decides who gets the video and who doesn't.

I like the tribute videos, but only really when it's a big homecoming for a guy they traded when he's deeper in his career. Weber going back to Nashville should get a video, for example. Long time Pred, great relationship with the team/community, and traded away because MGMT thought it best.

Its totally arbitrary.. but agree on this one... did he deserve one? No.

If you trade Cam Atkinson or Foligno next week are they gonna get a video, good chance they don't.

He was disappointed that there wasn't a tribute video?

This is terrific. We've reached the point where the NHL millennials are suffering because they didn't get their participation trophy.

Heaven help us.

Why be a classy franchise when it is so easy not to be?

Seth Jones played 3rd line minutes for parts of 3 years here and Management took the time to give him some time on the Jumbotron first time back here. Small gesture but II'm sure he enjoyed it. Why not do it for Ryan? At the very least he got you a stud defenseman in return. The reason is your Front office is petty. You can't buy class and you don't have it.

This makes a lot more sense from an outsider with the context and back story.

One thing I think worth noting though is that TheCBJArtillery poll is biased since the non-tribute video already happened.

I think in any fan base there is subset of fans who blindly defend management moves; so if CBJ had given a tribute and TheCBJArtillery done this poll; the numbers likely flip in favor of a video because of the fans who blindly defend managements decisions. Also Johansen getting booed during a tribute video might make him a more sympathetic character and endear him to some.

Either way great article!

Only thank you video I'd give Joey was for giving us Seth Jones. Not a player I ever was fond of on or off the ice. On the ice he had all the talent in the world, but was incredibly lazy. He always reminded me of a way lesser version of Joe Thornton, who as a player isn't what I like. For lack of a better term, the kid isn't a "winner". His compete level is crap. Off the ice he seems like a nice enough guy, but incredibly entitled. One decent year and you turn down a 46 million dollar contract lol. I was happy we traded him to begin with and the fact we got a stud in Seth Jones back was like helllll yeah.

You guys got the better of that deal. It's not even close. How does a guy get a tribute video after one good year followed by a contentious contract dispute? Comical.

Lol right? It's not like this Mike Modano coming back to Minneapolis when he's retiring. Gimme a break. The kid got paid while he was in Columbus...that's all the thank you he needs.
