1.4 million dollar cap hit

it's basically free insurance for the caps...almost no risk

Tanner,
Since you're the guy who knows the Yotes better than anyone here, do you see the Caps being a serious player for Hanzal? Caps don't necessarily need him, but it could be a move that puts them over the top. Plus, reports have said teams are more willing to deal a 1st with the draft being weaker and it wouldn't hurt the Caps to deal their 1st assuming they have a deep playoff run.

If you can somehow get past the 2nd round with Gilbert playing half of those games, they can have a god damn 1st round pick.

If the Caps are going to buy, I see them going more for a fourth line upgrade or replacing Alzner in the top-four. Hanzal is an upgrade over Jay Beagle, but He's not going to take away minutes from Backstrom, Kuznetsov or Ellar, so I doubt there's any point in going for him.

Hahah. If Gilbert was forced onto the third pairing, I'm sure he could hold his own. Seems like a good insurance policy.

I doubt he'll play much. I also don't think the Caps are particularly slow.

This strikes me as a deal for a player they could expose in the expansion draft, and nothing more.
