That Theo / KB pairing needs to be sheltered big time against the Caps - the other 2 pairs should be ok - I don't mind Kes on the 3rd line as long as his ice time is fairly equal to the other 2 lines with the 4th playing perhaps 7 minutes or so - and lets be clear Ducks still gave up way too many good looks against the Buf - they do that tonight it could be double digits for the Caps -

Tough loss. Washington is a good group, and that is a winning team culture. Barry Trotz is a darn good coach.

So Anaheim was down 1-3 in the second and they're on the power play. A turnover happens and former Duck, Daniel Winnik, is off with the puck. Hampus Lindholm was on defense. He was skating backwards pressing and poke checking Daniel, and then he did a 180. When that 180 degree turn happened it gave Winnik two things. It gave him time, and it gave him space. Every player on every NHL roster is capable of burning anyone once those two factors are there.

I'm not saying the was the play that lost the game, and I'm not here to chastise Lindholm. I'm just exploring a crucial play during the game. Nevertheless, I thought the bench management was good. How the team responded during the 2 intermissions was good. These teams aren't just going to give up chances. It's very difficult to outwork, muster and capitalize. I saw that in the second two periods, but a three period effort is what's required for excellence.

More baffled at Bieksa who decided not to cover anyone on the second and third goals. Hey Kevin, the Caps are the best team in the league, could you at least stick check someone in a red jersey?

Baffled? Have you seen him play? It's what he does. He's hard to play against physically. But passes come off his stick like scud missiles. And he's always out of position defensively.

I know I've defended KB for some time but now it's just to hard to justify the minutes he is getting - going forward it must be 47/42 - 4/71 53/2 - with 45 & 3 traded for some help - I'll live with the mistakes of Cam and Brandon - 71 is a def keeper - I cannot see a scenario where he is part of a trade -

I thought 71 and 53 played well. Vatanen has been on the road trip this entire time, so you'd think he'll play Tuesday against Minnesota. It'll be interesting to see how things pan out lineup wise. Although, the way I see it, Anaheim has 7 NHL caliber defensemen. Sometimes you get 5 guys and a fringe dude, as I've never seen this much depth on the blue line. It's pretty obvious and easy to speculate. The question is how much will Bob Murray leverage for a playoff run, while remaining conscientious of the expansion draft?

As for some more thoughts on last night, the problem was that there was an open guy 3 times right in front of the net in the first. How did that happen? One time Bieksa was beat off the boards. Besides that, the catalyst was the Capitals were doing a good job of these "high in the zone cycles," where they'd manipulate positioning on a defending winger. Thus forcing the defender to honor the offensive player, whom now has inside position, and then it was tic-tac-toe. Too easy. It's a risky offense, as Hayward discussed all the odd man rushes Anaheim was going to have, but when you have as many finishers as Washington does, who can blame them? What I'm going at, is as easy as it is to blame the defenders, it started with the wingers.

Can that offense be sustained? Yes. However, once a real playoff team understands what's going on; that'll be an interesting saga to watch play out.

This road trip is turning into a low point of the season. Minnesota is a tough place to play. I've shared my thoughts on Minnesota in the past. I'm not a fan to say the least. All you had to do in years prior was shut down Yeo's breakout game and it could pretty much be a tally in the win column. Now they're a team with confidence. Who would have thought?
