Peter Tessier: Jets Win but Stafford out & Laine back? The Jets had a practice today and Paul Maurice updated everyone on that status of a few players and Branden Tanev was recalled.

Why would you breakup the Little/Wheeler/Perreault line ?
I could see moving Petan to line with Ehlers and Schiefele......BUT with Petan as the centre and Schiefele moving to RW.

Even when you have a lot of faith in your team's coach, they almost always seem to do things that seem totally nonsensical to us fans.
Since this is a Jets blog I won't list all the headscratchers us Leafs fans see from Babcock...

I hope Laine is back soon. Even though I'm predisposed to mocking him on occasion or hoping he performs worse than Matthews by being a Leafs fan, I still respect his amazing skill. It sucks he was injured and I hope he is back soon and fully healthy.

Yeah, the info in the blog is wrong. Copp and Petan will be rotating as the other wing with Scheif and Ehlers. Perreault - Little - Wheeler is intact to begin with.

How about Myers. I don't even remember the injury . Did anyone even see it ? Maurice mentioned rehab is one small increment at a time. His previous report before the Florida trip was that he was making real progress. Then there is the whole "family matters" thing. While I respect the right to privacy, when its been this long a "matter" usually some reporter finds out relatively quickly if its a family member illness, father having a stroke, etc. Something just doesn't add up here.

Bottom line though is it doesn't sound like he will be back for weeks.

Looking at the Jets goalie situation I think it is pretty obvious as to how it will play out.
Maurice will stay with the three goalies for the foreseeable future until some of his other players come off injury. He claims there are real benefits with regards to isolating one at a time to work on technique while the other two are in goal for practice. Makes sense.

When the time comes it with be Hutch that goes to AHL. Nobody in their right mind will claim him with a sub .900 save percentage. With the expansion draft coming there are going to be goalies like Crawford and Fleury available( if they aren't traded first) so no one will want Hutch.

That all being said Helly is 33rd in NHL in save percentage. Brutal ! It truly sums up the Jets problem . Neither goalie is in top 30 in save percentage. The problem is if you do a trade for a goalie like Crawford then you end up exposing Helly. One of them would get taken. by Vegas.

Pavs is the short term solution, possibly for the next 30 games . Longer term though the Jets have a serious problem to fill for the next year or two until Comrie or Phillips can fill in as backup to Helly. We need a 1 to 2 year top rental goalie and he must be obtained after the expansion draft. Who will even be left at that point that is worth obtaining ?

couple things,
I would never assume the Jets future lies with Helly and that Comrie or Phillips are only there to back up. Either of those two could easily steal this thing from Helly.
The thing about Hutch is that he is signed next year very cheaply!! Every team in the NHL has to expose one goalie signed next year that has played a minimum amount of games (preventing teams from signing guys off the street, just to expose ) There is actually a large number of teams who dont have this "patsy" goalie yet and therefor it would make Hutch very attractive to be claimed on waivers.

I think you are trying to create a story where none exists. Myers most likely has a high ankle sprain, or worse a broken leg. Its obvious that Dano has a broken leg as well.

I also believe that Pavelec will be traded by the trade deadline. I have always said that Pavelec is a good tandem goalie and not a traditional number one. After 40+ games he normally begins to regress.

Good point on Hutch. I didn't realize that there were that many teams without a second goalie to expose. That does make him valuable trade wise instead of waivers. Maybe a 3rd or 4th rounder. Jury is still out on Pavs so not sure what we might get. I'd bet one of them is gone in next four weeks one way or another.

On your other point, I highly doubt you will see two rookie in net next year. Helly will be one of them. I suspect Comrie will be the backup although Phillips is a rising star. I'd love to have Copley over either of them. He made some fabulous saves the other night.

Still thinking about this goalie situation. Pavs is a UFA at the end of this year so he doesn't qualify to be exposed under the rules unless we decide to sign him cheap for one more year and then expose him. Seems silly though. No team will want him in a trade except as a decent back up goalie for playoffs. Maybe LAK.

Therefore it can only be Hutch as the exposed goalie. Ross is correct in that we cannot expose him to waivers because he is the only goalie we have that we can expose ( Except Helly who we will not expose). That also means we cannot trade him. Probably the messiest situation amongst NHL teams right now is this goalie dilemma.

I also wonder what happens if you were to have two goalies that have no trade clauses, or alternatively were to give a second goalie on your team a no trade clause.
The rule states as follows....

* All players who have currently effective and continuing "No Movement" clauses at the time of the Expansion Draft (and who to decline to waive such clauses) must be protected (and will be counted toward their club's applicable protection limits).

It seems the best goalies that might be available
for the expansion draft is Matt Murray of Pittsburgh ( MAF has no trade) . Scott Darling is a UFA and might be a great off season pickup for the Jets or make a trade with Vegas for Matt Murray. I could see Vegas trying to grab a few extra goalies and then trading them off as a way to improve their team. I could also envision some teams "parking" a goalie temporarily on a team with a light protection list.

As a good friend of mine explained to me this weekend. Its foolhardy to discuss goalie trades until after the trade deadline. Pavelec trade or being waived only makes sense as it does not appear that the Jets will carry three goalies for the last half of the season.
