i'm sure there'll be plenty that only seek to make a joke out of this, but nice piece

ya gotta hope for the best for a guy that goes out of his way for the fans, the team, and his teammates so (apparently) regularly. even if you do think it was a bad signing

and btw.... does columbus know about this part?

For instance, despite the severe language barrier, Shelley was one of the first Flyers veterans who tried to connect with Sergei Bobrovsky during the Russian goaltender's rookie year.

maybe jody should use that as leverage. ya know, salary wise

Nice story. August is such a painful time of the year it's hard to find good, interesting material to read. never liked him as a player but your points make me wonder why the flyers didn't find a role for him in the organIzation?

Thanks for the insight Bill, once again an excellent job of informing us outsiders.

Who knows, they may in the future. Glad the Blue Jackets offer came along quickly for him, though.

For a player so respected by the team, it is surprising that there has been no announcement made by the Flyers about his retirement.

i don't really mind if the enforcer is a bit of a dying breed, but i hope class act role players don't go the way of the dodo as well.

That was good, Bill. Glad to see the guy get a little respect. Some people aren't happy unless they're crapping on someone and he was an easy target.

Great write up, Bill. The Shelley signing was an overpayment, but he did everything he could to make the team better.

Teams need guys like Shelley, Briere and Jagr. Hopefully, some of those things have rubbed off on the young players and guys like Hartnell and G take it upon themselves to help young, foreign players assimilate.

Great write up Bill.

Shelley was the consummate pro dating back to his time with the Mooseheads. All the best in retirement Jody.

Nice write up bill. I have never heard anything but the most positive things from players and fans about Shelley. I remember one young player talk about what an honor it was to learn from such veterans as Jagr, Briere and Shelley. For a oft scratched enforcer to be amongst those highly skilled individuals really made me realize what He must put in off the ice.
Like most I lamented his cap hit with our typically tight cap space. But I truly lament having to have a cap also. As we fans have all become the stingiest of misers when calculating a players worth versus their contract. Sometimes I feel that the fan/player relationship suffers greatly.

For some reason I find the bit about Jagr speaking Russian and taking a Russian player under his wing fascinating considering his motivations for picking the uniform number that he did. He's a complex guy.

I've never took issue with Shelley, I'm perfectly fine with the Flyers carrying an enforcer role player. They've always been this way, its nothing new.

Nice piece Bill.
I kinda have a soft spot for JS.
His face always looked like it he got the worst of the fight, maybe he was a fighter who bruised easily.

One of our chickens hatched 2 Springs ago and had a piece of the shell stuck on her neck. As all the hens get named after Flyers, this one was named Shelley.

The current roster in the coop includes
Roo, Reimer, the Schenn's, Simmonds, Shelley, and Richards.
Carter passed away last Spring.

Great blog, Bill. Here's an off topic question for anyone; what is the capacity of the biggest hockey stadium? They seem to hold such a small amount of people compared to other sports (it's because of the size of the ice, right?). I was just watching a soccer game in Ireland (Liverpool vs Dublin), where they've sold out a 50,000 person stadium. The Phillies (when good) have little problems selling out their 45,000 person stadium. Many football teams seem to be able to fill their 60,000-70,000 person stadiums. When will hockey teams get anything more than baby stadiums? Cities like Toronto and Chicago would certainly have the fan base enough to fill up 30,000-50,000 person stadiums, Toronto can fill a standing space outside with a screen with thousands of people on will . Imagine what it could do for league revenues to increase some teams ticket revenues by 30 to 50%. The vision is a problem, though. The nose bleeders aren't actually a bad place to watch the game from, but if the stadium had twice as many seats, I'd imagine the nose bleeders wouldn't have the best vision. Have any teams tried getting bigger 30k-40k stadiums?

I would love to see a bigger stadium built in Philly. Ticket prices have become so insane here. I'd love to be able to get a $30 face value ticket to a game on game day like a Phillies game. The views at CPB from the 400 level werent bad at all for the Classic...

Bill, thanks for the kind post about Jody Shelley. So many people here make really ignorant comments about his won/loss record of fights, and judged him soley on that basis. There are qualities that transcend records, and this was one of those examples. It's nice for people to hear about the many facets of a players life, in and out of the rink. It makes them more human for lack of a better term.

Happy trails Jody! Your contributions haven't been overlooked, and definitely appreciated by most of us!

Thanks again Bill
