A Pair of Performance Graphs

Below is a quick compilation of shot-attempt generation (and shot-attempt deterrence) for forwards and defensemen in round one, respectively. Remember, team effects have a big role, so if you're considering analysis of player performance, benchmark him against where his teammates land here.

Below are the basic radial graphs, so here, you start at the top and work clockwise. Obviously, for the forwards, you want to see heavy shot-generation, so guys like Jamie Benn, Tyler Seguin, and Sidney Crosby look great here. The more you work around the clock, the better it gets.

Unfortunately, because I had to provide some constraints for the forward group, you'll notice players on some of the teams that swept (or didn't play a whole lot at EV) don't appear. Even a team like Anaheim -- six games, but were generous in their EVTOI allocations across the board -- don't have many names, though Corey Perry's in there.

For defensemen, the lower the attempts against, the better. It's kind of amazing how dominant Minnesota was in this series -- you'll notice how guys like Marco Scandella had monstrous first-round performances as a result. And, conversely, a guy like Bryan Allen -- who was matched-up quite a bit against Dallas' super-impressive top-line -- was fed to the wolves. Here, the more you work around the clock, the worse it gets.
