The Calgary Flames are still after a power winger and are hoping to fill that void in free agency.

One guy they are eyeing is Troy Brouwer, according to Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.

The Vancouver native has plans to build a house in Calgary, which he wants to make his offseason and retirement home. That’s why he’s there this week meeting with builders. But it just so happens that a source says the Flames are among the teams with interest in the winger and that Brouwer -- since he was in Calgary anyway -- met with the Flames in person this week. But, again, there are other teams interested. So who knows?

While on the surface it makes some sense - Brouwer is 6'3', 210 pounds and has averaged 21 goals and 41 points over the last three years - I think the Flames should stay away from Brouwer.

One of the reasons for that is Brouwer struggles when it comes to producing at full-strength. Over the last three seasons Brouwer has averaged 1.36 points per 60 minutes at 5 v 5. That's good for 196th among the 264 forwards who have played at least 2,000 minutes at 5 v 5 in that span.

If you look at the last two seasons the numbers are a little more friendly (1.49 points per 60) but still nothing to write home about.

On top of pedestrian scoring numbers at evens Brouwer's underlying numbers have been somewhat underwhelming.

From 2013-16 the Blues controlled 49.4% of the shot attempts with Brouwer on the ice and his expected goals for% in that span is 49.46%. Those aren't bad numbers, per se, but he struggled to break even while playing on a very good team.

On top of all else Brouwer will be 31 before playing a game and power forwards don't tend to age well.

When you factor in he'll command a multi-year deal worth a pretty hefty annual salary it seems like the best course of action would be to turn attention elsewhere. We'll see if the Flames feel the same way.
