On Monday afternoon GM Brad Treliving introduced Bill Peters as the new head coach of the Calgary Flames.

Some highlights and takeaways on what Peters had to say:

- Peters really likes the defense in place. He noted in the modern game you need your defense joining the rush and activating to provide extra layers of offense. The Flames have a very mobile blue line with plenty of firepower so the personnel seems like a great match for Peters.

- Peters said he's heard really good things about Rasmus Andersson and, based on what he's seen, "he looks like a hockey player." I think he is ready for full-time duty at the NHL level. Given Peters' comments about wanting the defense to activate and put their offensive skills to use, I'd expect Andersson to get a very long look in camp.

- When building line combinations, Peters focuses more on duos than trios. He looks for combinations that can find success together and rotates the third wheels in and out depending on the situation the team is in or if any line is lacking one particular element. As you'd expect, he plans on keeping Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan together.

- Peters likes the goaltending pipeline and expects David Rittich to be better now that he's familiarized himself at the NHL level. He also said Rittich will be pushed and hinted Treliving could go out and get some help this summer. To me, it sounds like they'll bring in a more proven backup and if Rittich beats him out, he beats him out.

- When discussing Troy Brouwer, Peters suggested there's more there and will give him a chance to bounce back. If the team improves the bottom-6, I actually think he could be somewhat useful in a depth role. If Peters plans on bringing back the #BrouwerPlay or giving him top-6 ice time, I am not at all here for that.

- Peters said he wants to be "demanding, not demeaning." He believes in positive reinforcement and wants his players to look forward to coming to work every morning. He talked about how bad he felt about chewing Eddie Lack out to the media after a poor stretch of play and joked he'd call Mike Smith, Jon Gillies, Tyler Parsons and Rittich to make sure they know that won't happen to them.

All in all, I liked a lot about what Peters had to say. Ultimately actions speak louder than words but I think Treliving has made a good hire here.
