When Patrik Elias announced he was retiring from the NHL, it was considered a matter of not if, but when his number would be retired by the New Jersey Devils.
As it turns out, the wait won't be a long one. Today, the Devils announced they'll raise Elias' No. 26 to the rafters Saturday, February 24th against the New York Islanders.
Elias will be the fifth player to have his number retired by the organization, with team legends Ken Daneyko, Scott Stevens, Scott Niedermayer, and Martin Brodeur, all big parts of the core during the glory years, being the only other players to receive the honor.
Elias tallied 86 points and 267 shots in 91 games against the Islanders, the most he recorded against any team, so it seems fitting the Devils will retire his number when the Islanders are in town.
