The New Jersey Devils have shored up their blue line a little bit by signing defenseman Ben Lovejoy to a three-year contract worth $2.66 million per season.

Lovejoy is a 32-year-old right-handed shot who averaged almost 19 minutes a night on the Pittsburgh Penguins last season. He probably shouldn't play a prominent role on any blue line but he will be able to eat up some of the minutes lost when the Devils traded Adam Larsson.

I don't love the terms but the Devils have plenty of cap space, needed help on the back end and there were definitely worse options out there than Lovejoy.

I'll have more on this in the coming days.

The Devils have also added some more depth up front with the signing of Vern Fiddler to a one-year contract.

He's a fairly good shot suppressor but he can also contribute some offense. He has put up 20+ points in three consecutive seasons and 10+ goals in two of the last three years.
