Draft Lottery Not Too Kind To The Calgary Flames

Prior to Saturday night's draft lottery Calgary Flames president of hockey operations Brian Burke made it known that he wouldn't be, well, pleased if the Edmonton Oilers won the top pick once again.

Burke's wish came true as the Oilers didn't win top spot in the draft, however, his Flames didn't, either.

The Flames, who had ~26% of winning a top-3 pick, not only failed to win one of the top slots but actually dropped in the process. As a result the Flames will be picking 6th overall come June.

While the Flames will still get the opportunity to pick between a handful of high-end talents the lottery results did hurt them.

As it stands right now Auston Matthews, Patrik Laine, Jesse Puljujarvi, Pierre-Luc Dubois and Matthew Tkachuk appear to be the consensus top-5. This, of course, means the Flames were guaranteed the opportunity to pick one of them at the five spot they sat in prior to the lottery.

Barring a (somewhat) off the board pick from a team in the top-5 the Flames will no longer have such luxury.

Still, from forwards such as Alex Nylander and Clayton Keller to defensemen Mikhail Sergachev, Jakob Chychrun and Olli Juolevi the Flames still have plenty of promising prospects to choose from.

GM Brad Treliving and co. now have a couple months to decide which one they like best.
