In effort to get down to the 23-man roster limit by Tuesday's 5 p.m. deadline, the Devils have waived three players.

Those players are forwards Cam Janssen and Steve Bernier, as well as veteran defenseman Pete Harrold.

Janssen being waived isn't at all a surprise and, though Bernier had a decent preseason, it's not surprising to see him waived with so much competition for forward spots.

The big surprise is Harrold, in my opinion. Pete DeBoer has spoken highly of him countless times and used him quite a bit over the last couple seasons, but the Devils want to ice the best possible roster and they can do so by waiving Harrold.

With Harrold out of the picture, the Devils now have seven defensemen on their NHL roster: Andy Greene, Bryce Salvador, Marek Zidlicky, Jon Merrill, Eric Gelinas, Adam Larsson and Damon Severson.

The last four are obviously inexperienced, but they all can skate, move the puck and have shown top-4 potential.

I figured Severson would be assigned to Albany and play big minutes there to start the year, but ultimately the Devils have decided he was too good in the preseason to send away.
