The Calgary Flames will have a whole new coaching staff in 2018-19.

Today they announced that head coach Glen Gulutzan, along with assistants Dave Cameron and Paul Jerrard, have been relieved of their duties.

While big and unfortunate news, it isn't necessarily surprising.

The Flames lacked depth but certainly had enough high-end pieces on the roster to be better than an 84 point team, especially in a down year for the Pacific Division.

That, along with the team's inability to stop the bleeding any time anything went wrong, is probably what cost Gulutzan his job.

Perhaps Cameron's key responsibility was managing the power play and, well, it was a disaster. The Flames ranked 26th in goals/60 while up a man and for much of the year the power play looked completely lifeless. Towards the end of the season there was a stretch of almost 20 games where they were actually out-scored on the power play. That simply can't happen.

As for Jerrard, I think he did a solid job with the penalty kill over the last couple seasons. Any new head coach will probably want to handpick his own staff, though, and I think Jerrard is a victim of that.
