The Calgary Flames elected to get some of their trade deadline shopping done early as today they pulled the trigger on a trade that fetched them defenseman Michael Stone from the Arizona Coyotes.
In exchange for Stone's services, the Flames parted with a 3rd round pick and a conditional 5th, which hinges upon whether the Flames re-sign Stone this off-season.
This trade is far from a surprise. The Coyotes made it no secret they wanted to move Stone prior to the deadline and, after growing tired of watching Dennis Wideman on a nightly basis, the Flames felt it was time to make a move and try to address a need.
While I think Stone is a better option than Wideman -- he can at least move and won't be turned inside out every shift -- I don't think he makes the defense much better and believe they could have better allocated those assets elsewhere.
I'll have much more on this deal in tomorrow's post.
