On Monday the Calgary Flames traded defense prospect Patrick Sieloff to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for forward Alex Chiasson.
Chiasson has since put pen to paper on a one-year deal with the Flames worth $800,000.
Some notes:
1) Chiasson has averaged 10 goals and 25 points over the last three seasons. If he can continue that production he'll provide good value in the bottom-6 for what it cost to bring him in and get him signed.
2) Chiasson has played under Glen Gulutzan before during his days with the Dallas Stars. Gulutzan's familiarity with Chiasson, what he can bring to the table and how he could fit into the system surely played a factor in the acquisition.
3) Over the last three seasons Chiasson's teams have controlled 48% of the shot attempts and 43% of the goals with him on the ice at 5 v 5. Without Chiasson those numbers jump up to 50% in both categories.
More bad than good tends to happen when he is on the ice and he certainly won't help out the Flames' already underwhelming possession numbers.
4) Sieloff's chances of making the NHL as a regular are slim to none. The Flames are also very deep when it comes to quality defense prospects. If Chiasson can contribute in any way shape or form this will be a win for the Flames.
5) Chiasson struggled in Ottawa - particularly last season - but he is an NHL player and he is signed at a team friendly price of $800K. Getting depth signed on the cheap is even more important now given the Flames' sticky cap situation.
6) I don't know that Josh Jooris has a future with the Flames - he wasn't qualified - but if the Flames can protect Chiasson by playing him with a possession driver I think it could help offset his struggles in that regard. We know Chiasson can provide depth scoring; it's just a matter of insulating him to help hide his flaws.
