Calgary Flames GM Brad Treliving is a busy man these days.
On top of his responsibilities with Canada at the World Hockey Championships, searching for a new head coach, and preparing for the draft, he also has to worry about re-signing a handful of players on his roster.
Among those players is 21-year-old center Sean Monahan, who is coming off a 27-goal, 63-point campaign.
While there's almost always debate whether to sign a young player long-term or to give said player a bridge contract (like we saw with Ryan Johansen in Columbus) that doesn't appear to be the case here.
TheFourthPeriod recently wrote a piece on Monahan's contract situation and quotes from Monahan's agent, Pat Morris, suggest a long-term deal is the priority:
Monahan wants a long-term contract, presumably in the six-to-eight year range, and could command around $6 million per season. Again, term and dollars haven't really been discussed, to date.
"That's all going to depend on what Calgary's thinking," Morris said, in reference to a long-term extension, adding that a short-term bridge contract is "not likely."
"He enjoys Calgary and certainly has excelled there. He wants the relationship to continue."
It's good to see that a bridge contract is "not likely" and that the two sides will be looking to get a long-term deal done.
Monahan is at least a couple seasons away from entering his prime and he has already proven that, at worst, he is a 25-goal, 60-point centerman.
Those kind of players don't grow on trees so the Flames would be smart to lock him up long-term.
I also think TFP is underselling Monahan when they say he "could command around $6 million per season."
Teams always have to pay a premium for goal scorers and point producers - especially when they play center - and I don't think this situation is any different.
I think Monahan will earn *at least* $6.5-7M per on his next deal. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think this will be a very expensive contract.
Time will tell if that's the case.
