Bad Start Costly As Devils Fall To Hurricanes

The New Jersey Devils had their three-game point streak snapped on Sunday afternoon as they fell 3-2 at the hands of the Carolina Hurricanes.

For much of the game the Devils were the better team but they dug themselves a 3-0 hole and in the end that proved to be too much to overcome.

The Good

- After a dreadful 1st period the Devils responded well and really took it to the Hurricanes the rest of the way. In the final 40 minutes the Devils out shot the Hurricanes 21-9, and out chanced them 18-13. They just needed a better start.

- Damon Severson had a couple hiccups in the defensive zone (like being torched by Nathan Gerbe) but overall he played a pretty strong game. He moved the puck effectively and when he was on the ice the Devils were in the offensive zone more often than not.

- With Severson and Moore on the ice the Devils out attempted the Hurricanes 17-9 at 5 v 5. The forwards they saw most of were Victor Rask and Jeff Skinner and Chris Terry, too, so it's not as if they were just feasting on depth players.

- The Bobby Farnham - Stephen Gionta - Tuomo Ruutu line was as effective as its been since being put together. They finished their checks, created a ton of havoc on the forecheck and did a nice job of working the Hurricanes' defense down low and sustaining time in the offensive zone. It was nice to see that line rewarded with a goal because they certainly deserved one.

The Bad

- The Devils were extremely sloppy in the early going. They were undisciplined, they missed passes and they couldn't generate any offense whatsoever. You're not going to win many games when you spot the opposition three goals before waking up.

- Andy Greene had three shot attempts - two of which were in the final shift while trailing by one - and none of them made it to the net. He was also the only negative possession player on the Devils (albeit by one shot attempt).

- I thought Devante Smith-Pelly played one of his worst games as a Devil. He didn't have a scoring chance, was on for a goal against and took two unnecessary penalties; including one unsportsmanlike penalty for arguing the initial call.

Stat Of The Game

The Devils did not record a high-danger scoring chance on the power play for the second time in three games.
