Who Goes in Flyers' Cap Dilemma?

UPDATED: cap fix on Upshall ...

**

I asked Flyers' GM Paul Holmgren today how he intends to resolve his looming salary cap dilemma. He answered with the obvious. Waive some bodies or trade someone.

With 2 players on long-term injury, the Flyers cap is approximately $52.6 million. When Danny Briere comes off LTI - either this weekend or next week - his $6.5 million salary goes back on the cap, bringing the number to $59.1 million.

The Flyers have to lose $2.4 million.

"You can figure it out what we have to do," Holmgren told me.

Okay, the way I see it _ and I said this on Daily News Live tonight _ is that the club has a choice. They could trade Upshall ($1.225 million), once he is healthy, or Joffrey Lupul ($2.3 million) or they could make a series of moves, waiving Lasse Kukkonen ($875,000) and sending a few players back to the Phantoms, which is going to happen, anyway, once Briere comes back.

Holmgren would like to see Briere in the lineup by the weekend, but judging from Briere's comments yesterday, I'm guessing he won't be back until next week.

If you want to discuss this, you can chat with me live tonight on CSNPhilly.com's "coveritlive.com" blog at 10 p.m. when the Flyers-Canucks game begins. I'll be chatting the entire game.

Let's hope it's not overtime.
