i spoke to someone directly tied to Donald Fehr tonight.

He had taken the job as exec. dir. of NHLPA, as SportsBusiness Journal reported earlier this evening.

This person is not a player.

Flyers' player rep Scott Hartnell told me he heard the news, as well and was ecstatic that Fehr is coming aboard as executive director.

The NHLPA FINALLY can call Gary Bettman's bluff on these contract challenges. Don Fehr won't be a pushover.

“I think with Don Fehr at our helm and leading us in the right direction, he is probably the last guy [Bettman] wants in that position,” Hartnell told me.

That said, Fehr is tougher than Bob Goodenow.

This could lead to another lockout, although, I for one, believe the players have a good deal with the CBA and should only be looking to protect what they have earned.

I also feel they union should vigorously fight Bettman on some of these contract challenges - like Chris Pronger's. That affects free agency and sends a chill to clubs about signing players long term.

Here's my story on CSNPhilly.com (Hartnell quotes will be added shortly to it):

The Flyers will appear on national television a total of 18 games this season.

No surprise there.

Or that VERSUS seems to only love Flyer-Rangers games ...
