Flyers will call up Andreas Nodl tomorrow morning ... Steve Downie and Jared Ross were sent down to the Phantoms today ...

When you've covered a pro beat for many years, especially, the same team, you know instinctively what players on the club have a "pulse" for what is going on.

A lot of people never thought Derian Hatcher was a very good captain because the year he wore the "C," his play was awful, in large part, because of injury.

Yet the beat writers clung to every word Hatcher had to say simply because, he always had his finger on the pulse of the club and he wore his emotion on the sleeve of his sweater.

I feel Kimmo Timonen is a guy, who like Hatcher, knows exactly what is going on and is willing to state it publicly, but doesn’t rip as much.

Mike Richards is a player who knows more than he says because he is less trusting of the media. And now that he is captain, I think he will be even more guarded in what he says publicly.

But the one player who day-in, day-out always seems to know what the score is and isn't afraid to say it, is Mike Knuble.

And I think Mike Knuble has the right idea of just what ails the Flyers because it's what I've been thinking after watching the first 5 games of the season and drawing back to last spring’s long playoff run.

That is, the Flyers aren't playing with any sense of desperation simply because ... it's October and 77 games remain.

That's a mental barrier this team needs to hurdle quickly, given it is already 11 points behind the Rangers.

“Maybe because it’s October, it doesn’t appear to be a threat,” he told me today at practice.

I suggested to a number of players that this team seems to think it's on auto-pilot.
autopilot from last year/forgot how hard to play?

“It might be," Timonen told me. "Hard to say. I don’t feel it, but maybe it shows in the game where we think it’s too easy."

BTW: Steven Downie and Jared Ross were both sent down to the Phantoms this afternoon.
