How the Halak Did That Happen?

First off, Danny Briere tells me he and his son are "fine" after his accident in upstate NY. Briere is very lucky he was in a Ranger Rover when he sideswiped a tractor trailer.

Anything else we might have had a double tragedy. Very lucky.

My first thought on Jaroslav Halak ... A conversation with someone from the Flyers over the winter who felt that Halak wasn't legit. I felt in the playoffs, Halak proved he was "legit." I know he raised eyebrows on the Flyers staff who were not high on him.

Just because the Flyers beat the Canadiens, doesn't mean Halak wasn't an MVP goalie. He was to Montreal.

My second thought was when I saw what it took to get him in St. Louis, my reaction was, "couldn't the Flyers have given them more?"

The answer ... no.

The Flyers don't have many top prospects right now who are in the minors and ready to help other teams. Their best young players are already on the roster: James van Riemsdyk and Claude Giroux. Every team wants Giroux as part of some deal, I am told, whenever the Flyers talk trade.

The Flyers don't have players people covet and that's going to be an issue moving forward. They don't have draft picks, either. Making deals like the one St. Louis did today won't work for the Flyers.

People say, well, 'what about Jeff Carter' ?

Montreal doesn't have the cap room for Jeff Carter. Habs' GM Pierre Gauthier was looking to lose NHL salary, gain prospect salary, only. He did that. I thought it was an awful trade. St. Louis got the better of the deal.

I'm just wondering how many NHL GMs are kicking themselves, saying, 'we could have topped that.'

The Flyers were not players in this deal at all.

At least now, we know Carey Price won't be a Flyer. I wasn't sold on him, anyway.

So where do the Flyers go for a goalie?
