San Jose Sharks forward Logan Couture was injured in practice today, apparently from a freak fall.

It sounds like it’s a terrible bout of bad luck for the new assistant captain added to a slow start offensively. Despite his lacking offensive numbers through the first three games, Couture has been playing great hockey – and he’s the backbone of that second line offensively, whether on the sheet or not.

The result of the injury wasn’t that comforting.

Then this followed later on…

If Couture’s ankle is broken, the Sharks forward could be out for 6-8 weeks according to Google, which I have no reason to doubt because it’s never given me a bum steer.

The biggest question is what will the Sharks do with the vacancy?

Do they shift Marleau to the middle to minimize the impact on the rest of the lines? Do they move Hertl up to - *gasp* - the top six? Does Ben Smith draw in? Does Nikolay Goldobin get a call-up?

So many questions, zero answers.

If it was me, I’d switch Marleau to the middle and go from there. The easiest, and less destructive to the lineup, move would be to sit Marleau at center and call up Nikolay Goldobin to play in the top six. They both have the skill level for those roles. Marleau played center for years and Goldobin is a highly touted prospect.

Ben Smith coming in would mean a major shift in the look of the bottom six, and not for the good. If they wanted to get real crazy they could slot him in at 2nd line center and start the tank, but let’s hope that doesn’t happen.

I’d like to see Marleau in the middle, Goldobin on the wing. What say you Sharks fans? What would you like to see done/what do you think will actually be done if Couture misses an extended period of time?

Thanks for reading.
