Following the Capitals 6-2 blowout at the hands of the Penguins in Game 7 of the Conference Semi-Finals, I decided to take a break to regroup and get back to real life for a little while. Now that I have gotten that out of my system I will be returning regularly with news and notes in the following month leading up to the Draft in Montreal.

A review of the Capitals season and their foray into the second round of the playoffs will be up in the next few days, but for the time being I leave you with this interesting piece of information...

Offers...From Russia With Love?

There are many reports being leaked that both Sergei Fedorov and Viktor Kozlov are(or already have) to sign offers with teams in the Russian KHL.

The reports come at an interesting time as both of the Capitals forwards are in the midst of supposed conversations with the Capitals, yet when has that ever stopped a player from signing elsehwere?

So, Fedorov may return to Russia after 18 years in the NHL to join his two brothers...not such a difficult thought to digest. Yet, it is the reported signing of a 2 year deal with Salavat Yulaev (UFA) in the KHL by Viktor Kozlov that is more intriguing.

Although both scenarios are highly plausible, one has to wonder about the legitmacy of these reports.

From all understanding the Capitals would be very interested in bringing back both forwards, albeit likely at discounted rates. There is no question that the KHL can most likely offer the two players more money than they could find in the NHL, but does that mean more than a chance to play for the Capitals on a team that can seriously improve on their successes from this season? No one can answer that but the two gentlemen in question.

I would not bet against these things happening as, realistically, forgoing the signing of both of these players will actually allow GM George McPhee more room to maneuver and the opportunity to sign younger players via UFA...for that matter, it may also open up the pocket book enough to allow the pursuit of an elite blue liner.

Regardless of what is going on, what is certain is that there will be verifiable information concerning the intentions of these two available in the near future. Things have been quiet until now, but with the Stanley Cup Finals all but set, most of the teams in the league are now beginning to turn their attention to the Free Agent market as well as the Draft.

With the possibility of losing both Sergei Fedorov and Viktor Kozlov, as well as the eventual addressing of Michael Nylander's playing status and contract, the Capitals may have alot more room on the payroll than they thought.

What would you do?

One possible situation would be filling the void with some of the young talent that Washington has in their farm team, the Hershey Bears.

Hershey is set to take on the Manitoba Moose for the Calder Cup this week in an effort to win the Bears 2nd Calder in the last 4 years(Bruce Boudreau was coached the Bears to their last Calder Cup win). The Bears are boasting some serious talent and are on quite a high after having dispatched the Providence Bruins in 4 straight games.

Although George McPhee must now address the situation of these two Russians, it does not mean he has not been busy.

Here is the latest signing by the Capitals:

Capitals Sign Center Jake Hauswirth

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have signed undrafted free agent center Jake Hauswirth to a three-year entry-level contract, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today. In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Hauswirth, 21, is a 6’5”, 210-pound native of Merrill, Wis., who has spent the last two seasons with the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League (USHL). He scored 28 goals and added 24 assists (52 points) in 58 games this season, tied for the team lead in goals and fourth in points. He led all Lancer forwards and was second on the team with a +16 plus/minus rating.

Hauswirth helped lead Omaha to the USHL championship as a rookie in 2007-08, recording 13 goals and 10 assists (23 points) in 57 games.

Hauswirth participated in the Capitals’ development camp last summer and will be in attendance at this summer’s camp as well.
