Fedorov Signs with Metallurg, Caps Have Some Shopping To Do

Fedorov to Join Brothers in Russia

As has been rumoured and speculated, Sergei Fedorov has officially bid his playing career in the NHL and North America adieu.

Fedorov, who is 39 and would be entering his 19th NHL campaign, has decided to return home to play with his brothers for Metallurg.

Fedorov will be returning home full time for the first time since he defected nearly 20 years ago.

(For more details on Fedorov's decision, check out TSN.ca or Tarik over at Caps Insider.)

Along with Viktor Kozlov, Fedorov's commital to play in the KHL has opened up new doors to a 'getting younger by the second' Washington Capitals squad. With the $6.5 million allotted to these two back on the books, George McPhee et al. will have to think long and hard at how they want to go about things.

There is still the need to resign tough guy Donald Brashear, as well as a couple key RFA's(ShaMo,Jurcina, Schultz).

Who stays, who goes?

Freeing up the Cap space will allow the Caps to explore more avenues, namely signing via free agency and/or getting creative on a very abundant trade market. The Salary Cap is likely going down or staying neutral, so the best any GM can hope for is that alot of the hopes and dreams of pending big name UFA's get shatterred when the Cap officially decreases and they are forced to think about taking less money than expected.

Obviously that is a far stratch situation, but, as it stands, if the Cap goes down, alot of teams will be at or over the limit(with several players still to be signed).

The Salary Cap is set to be announced at some point in the next few days. Reports have it being announced next Monday, following the full and complete review of the player reps votes on the 5% Salary Inflator.

With the draft coming up in less than 48 hours, I am in the process of(nearly finished) compiling a detailed Capitals draft preview as well as a current prospect report. I will also explore the steps that Washington wants to take in addressing, what will be, two key voids left by the veteran Russians, Fedorov and Kozlov.

In the meantime, who would you sign/trade for to replace Fedorov and Kozlov? Or do the Caps dig into a bountiful farm system full of prospects fresh off conquering the AHL and capturing the Calder Cup?
