WJC's Always a Holiday Treat

The Washington Capitals announced today that 3 of their recent draft picks have been invited to their respective World Junior camps in order to fight for the right to represent their countries this Christmas in Regina.

Those players are John Carlson, Stefan Della Rovere and Cody Eakin.

Carlson, who everyone knows by now, will depart Hershey in mid-December to join his fellow Americans, while Eakin and Della Rovere will vie for spots on Team Canada.

Although everyone knows about Carlson by this point, having made his NHL debut in Montreal only a week ago and for being the leading offensive defenseman on the Hershey Bears, not many people know about Della Rovere and Eakin.

Della Rovere was a 7th round selection two years ago and will be returning to Team Canada as a veteran having participated and earned a Gold Medal last Christmas. Stefan is captain of the Brampton Battalion and is slowly turning into a great late draft steal by Washington's scouting department.

Eakin, on the other hand, has higher expectations, but isn't waiting to fulfill them as the Caps 3rd round choice currently leads the WHL in goal scoring with 25.

Carlson and Della Rovere are all but a certainty to make their respective International Teams while Eakin will be the only one competing to secure a first time spot, although considering Eakin's 25 goals and 40 points in 29 games for the Swift Current Broncos, I'm quite certain he will find a spot.

Here is the press release as per the Capitals:

Capitals Prospects Stefan Della Rovere, Cody Eakin and John Carlson Invited to National Junior Team Camps

ARLINGTON, Va., – Washington Capitals prospects Stefan Della Rovere and Cody Eakin have been invited to attend the 2010 Canadian National Junior Team Selection Camp, Hockey Canada announced today, while a third Capitals prospect, John Carlson, has been named to the preliminary roster for the 2010 U.S. Junior National Team, USA Hockey announced today.

Della Rovere and Eakin are two of 36 players who will attend Canada’s camp that runs from Dec. 12-16 in Regina, Sask. Carlson will join Team USA for an exhibition game against the Czech Republic Dec. 22 in Regina. All three are candidates to represent their countries in the 2010 World Junior Championship that begins Dec. 26 in Saskatoon and Regina, Sask.

Della Rovere, 19, was the Capitals’ seventh-round choice, 204th overall, in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. He is currently the captain of the Barrie Colts in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and has recorded 21 points (10g-11a) in 24 games. The Maple, Ontario, native was a member of the 2009 Canadian National Junior team that won the gold medal at the World Junior Championship. Della Rovere played in all six games, registering a goal and an assist.

Eakin, 18, was the Capitals’ third-round choice, 85th overall, in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. The Winnipeg, Manitoba, native leads the Swift Current Broncos of the Western Hockey League (WHL) with 40 points (25g-15a) in 29 games, and is the top goal-scorer in the WHL.

Carlson, 19, was the Capitals’ first-round choice, 27th overall, in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. He has split time with the Capitals and the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL) this season. The Natick, Mass., native made his NHL debut on Nov. 20 against Montreal and appeared in three contests with the Capitals. He leads all Hershey defensemen in scoring with 16 points (1g-15a) in 21 games.
