Sharks rally to earn two big points

The San Jose Sharks came back from three different one-goal deficits to defeat the Edmonton 4-3 in overtime.

Tomas Hertl led the way with two goals, including the OT winner. Logan Couture snapped out if his funk with his 28th goal of the season and Brenden Dillon chipped in with his second goal of the season.

Couture added a pair of assists to increase his overall point total to 52 (28g 24a). The three point-night snapped a four game pointless drought. The 28-year-old ranks third in team scoring behind Brent Burns (56) and Joe Pavelski (54).

The real hero of the night was Hertl. He saved his teams bacon when they looked all but cooked. The 24-year-old ranks third in team scoring with 37 points (18g 19a). He needs two more goals to reach 20 goals for the second time in three seasons. He had a career high 21 goals and 46 points in 2015-16. He's had a pretty decent bounce back year following last seasons debacle.

Martin Jones earned the "W" in his 50th start of the season. The Sharks netminder stopped 25 shots for his 24th victory of the season. Jones put a strangle-hold on his starter status. He's started 19 of 22 games since Jan. 30th, proving that the Aaron Dell "the starter" era in San Jose may be over. Remember when people thought starting Dell over Jones was a good idea? Yeah, me neither.

The Sharks moved three points ahead of the Kings for second place in the Pacific Division. San Jose plays the second of a the current three-game Western Canada trip on Friday in Calgary. That game has big-time playoff implications for both teams, especially the Flames. Calgary trails both L.A. and Anaheim by two points in the race for the third a final spot in the Pacific. This race is going to go down to the wire.

It was a big win for the Sharks. They could not afford to leave Edmonton without at least a point and they somehow managed to muster enough guile to get two. I'm encouraged by who the goal scorers were. The Sharks need Hertl and Couture to get their offensive games going in these final dozen games of the season. Plus, it was very nice to see somebody not named "Burns" chip in from the back end.

That's all for now.
