Reaching the final dog days of a painfully slow summer in San Jose

It may seem like an eternity since the finned San Jose Sharks logo has graced the front page of this website and truth-be-told, it has been.

"Why?" you ask.

Good question.

The best answer I can give without seeming like a lazy fool is...the Sharks really did nothing of interest after re-signing some of their own early into the off-season. With all the buzz surrounding the draft, expansion and new uniforms; the Sharks have done nothing to make headlines of their own.

Think about it, since losing out on an aging Patrick Marleau to free agency and the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Sharks have made no significant moves. No free agent signings. No trades. Nothing to bolster an aging team (8 players north of 30) that had a steep drop off in offensive production last season.

One year removed from a trip to the SCF, San Jose finished towards the bottom of the Western Conference in offense and the power play was virtually non-existent for much of the campaign. Yet, they were among the top teams in a very tough Pacific Division from jump street. Those offensive shortcomings were very much exposed in a first round playoff loss. That should have been motivation enough for Doug Wilson to make a change or two. Nope, nothing.

Moreover, the Sharks had no forwards in the top 20 in points and we may be headed for more of the same once the puck drops in less than a month. That in itself makes the lack activity from Wilson a bit surprising...no, a lot surprising.

The belief is that San Jose has a ton of faith in their younger forwards and that's all well and good, but faith alone won't sustain us anymore.

San Jose has almost $7 million in cap space and are reportedly linked to off all things - a defenseman in UFA Cody Franson.

Now that we are about to start training camp it is time for the Sharks to ramp up the activity an in turn, I'll ramp up the writing.

So what do you think... Is the Sharks roster, as is, still among the best in the West or do they need to make a move or two to keep up with the Jones's? Let us know in the comments below.

...

Small signing Update: By small, I mean flea-sized.

The Sharks signed defenseman, Jacob Middleton, to a three year, entry-level contract. The 6’3”, 210 pound defenseman recorded nine points and 56 penalty minutes in 50 games with the Barracuda last season.

So there's that.
