Canadian Thanksgiving is here for those of us north of the 49th parallel, and despite hockey in its NHL form taking a beating right now, we all truly have plenty to be thankful for. My thanks for my wonderful family aside, a huge dose of thanks and admiration always go out to those brave and selfless individuals serving in our armed forces. Agree with the policies of their government or not, I’ve always felt that anyone who is willing to put their lives on the line, as well as go through the emptiness that comes from deployed far away from loved ones, in the genuine belief that their sacrifice will better the world are giving of their lives in a way that many could not conceive of doing, and that deserves respect.

With that in mind, I wanted to throw out a display case post today from a member of the Canadian military whose story just so happened to play out while he was a long ways away from his then home of New Hammond, Nova Scotia. I hope those among that Hockeybuzz community will take the opportunity to spend a minute to drop a “thanks” or offer a tip of the hat to fellow Hockeybuzzard Tim Chiasson who was keeping watch off the coast of Libya last summer when he was contacted by his wife with this chance encounter with none other than Sid “The Kid” Crosby. As I said before Tim, thanks for all the sacrifices you have made for us. Your daughter has got a hell of a dad…

In the Summer of 2011 I was on deployment off of the coast of Libya and I received an e-mail from home. My 2 1/2 year old (at the time) daughter had just met Sidney Crosby in Hammonds Plains, NS after a parent-tot skate. Sid was there getting some ice-time in during the off-season and my wife noticed him walk by during the skate. She then proceeded to pick my daughter up and skate as fast as she could off the ice. Once hitting the rubber terrain she ran after him. She missed him. A worker saw the chase and went out back of the arena and asked Sid if he would come inside to meet my daughter. He came back in, after already sitting in his vehicle, and posed for a few pictures with my daughter and signed one of her skates.

After leaving on 2 days notice in March, the e-mail I got in June with the picture of Crosby, my daughter and the skate put a smile on my face until we arrived home in September.

A great story for the family, and a well needed pick me up for a father and hockey fan many miles from home! Thanks for the story Tim!

As for the rest of you, do you have a piece of treasured memorabilia that has a great story behind it? Let me know and you can be featured in an article. Doesn't matter how big or small the piece is, how valuable it may be, or whether it's a common item or more oddball. If you think it has a story, contact me via the information below and we'll chat.
