The Display Case #19: Gilmour Is Such A "Caricature"!

I unapologetically have a special place in my heart for the odd things in life. Be they people, places or things, anything "off the beaten path", as it were, tends to evoke my response. Sometimes it's laughter, sometimes awe, and sometimes it's just that silent wonderment you have for something so unique as words cannot possibly describe...

My appreciation for the oddball doesn't leak into my hobby interests. Rather it straight up deep sea dives in it!!! The more unique and oddball the better as far as I'm concerned (within limits of course [see: Maple Leaf Gardens locker room crapper]). So when I see something like what follows here, nevermind that it's of my fav player ever, I get collectors envy! Check it out:

Two summers ago, I took my mother-in-law and wife out for a Saturday morning of garage selling! (It's a way of bonding with my mother-in-law because my wife rarely attends). We rolled up to this nice house in New Sudbury and once we got out of the vehicle, there it was... leaning up against a large tree. "Dougie" in all his glory!!!!! "Dougie" of course was Doug Gilmour and it was a large plexi-glass caricature portrait of him from a Sudbury Restaurant, “Gilmour's 93 Sports Bar”. For years on my way to work each day I used to drive pass the Gilmour 93 Restaurant on Notre Dame Blvd and now I had the opportunity to buy the outdoor sign and own a large piece (approx. 4' x 8') of Sudbury and hockey history. After many threats from my better half, I bought "Dougie" and he is proudly displayed in our movie room (man cave) along with my original 1967 Export A Hockey Calendar displaying the last winning Stanley Cup Leaf team. I'm a die-hard Leaf fan and "Dougie" is very unique!!!! At night, when I go down to watch the Leafs, I tell my wife "I'm going to visit Dougie."

Nice land Rick! A great centerpiece to any Leafs’ fans sports-cave!
