Welcome back to “The Display Case” where we’re about to go all Hall Of Fame coach on your posterior…

Today’s unique piece of memorabilia not only had its own unique bit of hockey lore attached to it, the back story was revealed to the owner via none other than Mr. Scotty Bowman himself!!! Che-check it ooout:

Hi Shawn,

I was reading through some of the past Display Case articles and thought I would send you one.

I'm a hockey nut. I only sport I watch on purpose. OK, I will watch the Red Sox(not this year) or Patriots if it happens to coincide with a break from what ever I'm doing. I consider that accidental however. I've rooted for the Bruins through the good times and the bad.

I'm not an autograph or memorabilia collector. I do however collect antique hockey sticks. I pick them up when ever I find them at the flea markets, auctions or yard sales. I've probably got 25 of them. But I don't think I ever spent more than $20 on any one stick. I just hang them on the wall in the barn. I've never been an autograph collector. I've seen quite a few of the Bruins over the years and even skated with some of them in the men's leagues. I'm just not the type of person to ask someone for an autograph.

Anyways, I have a friend who's family is friends with Scotty Bowman. Her father in law used to play with Scotty I believe. He was coming to NH for a political fund raiser for her Mom. Just a small, private party at her house. Knowing what a hockey nut I am, she invites me to come over. I give it some good consideration before wimping out. But I ask her if she will get a stick signed for me and my son. I grab an antique child's stick and an adult stick from my pile and pass them off to her.

The next day she brings them back and is all excited. Scotty Bowman recognizes one of the sticks and wants to know where I got it. The stick had the name "W. Taylor" burned into it. I didn't think much of it when I grabbed it. But Scotty knew who it belonged to and was telling her the history of it and Taylor. I looked him up and he was an interesting character.

(See more here on Bill Taylor)

One of the only players ever banned for gambling from the NHL. Bill ended up being a scout for Pittsburgh and that could be from where the connection with Scotty comes from? I'm not sure on how he knew for sure it was Bill's stick. I probably shoulda gone to meet him and I would have these answers huh. I'm a bonehead with anti-social tendencies sometimes.

I thought that was pretty cool for some cheap auction buy gathering dust in my barn. That stick has since gotten an upgrade from the barn wall to my den.
