The Toronto Legacy?

As Eklund wrote yesterday another group is interested in bringing a team to TO. In case everyone thought it was just a pie-in-the-sky idea, they held a press conference today to announce their intentions.

see tsn article here

They hope to build a 30,000 seat stadium that will have half of its tickets available for under $50/game.

They plan to donate 25% of net profits to charity: local, national, and international.

They plan to fund the entire project privately so no taxpayers on the hook for a ton of money which trumps Jim's renovation plans that would require government (taxpayer) input.

Most of all, it's a group that doesn't include an investor that the other NHL owners clearly don't want to work with.

Does this proposal take the wind out of the sails of the Balsillie bid? Does this mean that as long as the NHL can stall the bankruptcy court until the end of the month then Jim goes away as promised and the NHL has a group with a ton of money that they feel they can work with who can step in and bring a seventh team to Canada?

If nothing else, the timing sure looks right. Fans want a team. NHL doesn't want certain person who wants to move existing team to become an owner. Fans express outrage. New group steps up to fill need and offers what league and other owners are looking for. NHL accepts new group and effectively locks out distasteful owner. Fans are happy to get team. NHL owners are happy to get influx of cash. League gets to have everyone play by the rules...

It's like these events were scripted by the writers of the Cosby show...

Thanks to everyone who tuned in and who participated in our initial foray into live net-conferencing with the help of ooVoo and Versus. I had a great time and would love to do it again, especially if we can drum up some more people with webcams and mics... And of course headsets to limit any echo! :)

Special thanks to jamcam and Kaspar for hanging out and talking Flames and other hockey events and hope we'll do some more in the future!

Have a great day!
