Can The Pens Do It?

I have no problem admitting it. As much as I wanted the Penguins to win this series there is no way you could have convinced me that they had much of a chance to win. Even after four games I don't think many outside of Pittsburgh would have given them much of a chance. That number likely dwindled further after the events of game five as well.

Game six was different. Sure the score was close but that effort by the Pens was probably the most complete team effort we've seen from a team not wearing a winged wheel in a long time. They forechecked relentlessly, but more importantly they also backchecked relentlessly, and when they were caught from behind or had a bad bounce they put their heads down and worked to get back into the play. They literally played Detroit's game and it worked. It caused many to rethink the idea that maybe Detroit was just destined to win regardless of how many games the series went.

Of course that game was in the Igloo and the Pens enjoyed such positive elements as the home crowd and the last change. Is there any chance that if they have a dominant period like the first of game six and come up empty that they can keep up the tempo or will their be that slight lapse. That few minutes of let-down. That momentum changing pocket in a game where they allow doubt to creep in and the Wings pounce once again like they did in game five when they potted three straight powerplay goals and finished the game early?

Sure there's a chance. Any time an opportunity boils down to one game who can predict what team or player will be hot, or who just doesn't seem to have it that day. When you bring a couple hot-shots like Malkin and Crosby to the dance, you have to believe that there's a chance.

Of course Malkin and Crosby have both had serious issues playing in the motor city, and let's not even talk about Mr. Fleury's stats in Motown.

The Red Wings played all season to ensure that they would have the last game of the play-offs on home ice if it came down to it. It has. I'm sure they're feeling pretty confident about their chances right now...

Of course, I'd still like to see the Pens win. Did you know that the last team to come back from a 3-2 deficit to win the cup was....

You know what? I'm done with hockey for the year...

Have a great day!
