Text Message: MacT is going somewhere – to the unemployment line.

Contrary to a controversial text message sent from Edmonton Oilers’ owner Darryl Katz two weeks ago, calling off the dogs on his embattled head coach Craig MacTavish, the Oilers’ bench boss is now officially looking for work.

Craig MacTavish is gone, after all,

Oiler GM Steve Tambellini’s announcement earlier today, potentially signals a changing of the guard, from the Oilers’ Boys on the Bus to a new regime prepared to get the copper and blue bus rolling again.

Whether it was strictly a team decision, or a mutual decision between MacT and the team’s front office is quite insignificant. The fact is the decision was needed – arguably necessary even months ago – to commence the process of breathing new life into this dressing room.

And to restore respect for the logo and the tradition of commitment to winning here, which fans have come to expect.

MacT’s record speaks for itself – eight seasons, three playoff appearances – and countless regular seasons of underachievement in front of disappointed sell-out crowds at Rexall Place.

The time has been ripe for a coaching change in Oil Country for some time. MacT surely would be the first to concur. When players regularly fail to compete – and in one’s own barn, no less – it’s becomes glaringly apparent the million-dollar monkeys have taken over the zoo!

For those who supported MacT, take solace in knowing the axe that swung first at him, will likely swing again, this time impacting the players that ultimately cost their coach his job.

So, an era ends in E-town, but don’t be quick to mourn the dead for the living must often endure the most pain.

And thus concludes Steve Tambellini’s honeymoon in the Heartland of Hockey.

Chin up Oiler fans – better days ahead.
