UPDATE: Sportsnet is reporting that Marian Gaborik will make his long-awaited return to the Wild lineup Sunday against the Oilers.
Twenty-four hours, four points and a whole lotta momentum heading into the Twin Citiies.
The momentum swings have truly been unexplainably gargantuan for the Edmonton Oilers this season, and were no more evident than the past 24 hours for the copper and blue.
Struggling to hang around the Western Conference play-off scene, the Oilers waltzed into Colorado last night and triggered a massive offensive avalanche scoring an 8-1 victory over injury-riddled Colorado. Looking at
Ryan Smyth last night, one has to wonder whether he regrets his decision that led to his unexpected departure at the trade deadline a few years back.
Nonetheless, a day later, the Oilers blow into the Windy City, earn a point in regulation, before skating off with another point in the Shootout and a clutch "W" thanks to the new guys in E-town,
Patrick O'Sullivan and
Ales Kotalik.
Exciting game; outstanding result.
And just when you think Craig MacTavish has gone to the well one too many times in throwing
Dwayne Roloson in net, the club's MVP faces another truck-load of rubber (43 shots, one of which was a thwarted penalty shot to Chicago Captain
Jonathan Toews, no less) and proceeds to lead his team to another huge victory, while earning the game's first star once again.
A week ago the Oil drop looked as though it was running low, but has since seemingly found some chemistry; its legs, a forecheck, solid goaltending yet again and scoring confidence.
Still too many nail-biting defensive breakdowns, (Souray looked particularly suspect at times tonight, disengaged around the net) but it's difficult to argue with winning, especially given the fact they played in the Mile High City the evening before.
On a side note,
Ben Eager's head shot to an unsuspecting Oilers' forward
Liam Reddox had concussion written all of it. First Ian Laperrier's shot on Ladi Smid last night and now Eager's wreckless elbow on a player, who had already dished off the puck. No place in the game for either play. Both incidents deserve suspensions – penalty or not - from league disciplinarian, Coli Campbell.
On the bright side, nice to see contributions from Penner and Cogliano, the latter of which always gives an honest effort each and every shift. And
Robert Nilsson's pass to Sammy Gagner was absolutely epic – and on a string no less – sending the confident youngster in for a high-light reel tally.
That one most certainly pulled a few Oiler fans out of their arm chairs.
With tonight's victory, Edmonton now sits one point back of the sixth-place Columbus Blue Jackets with 79 points.
The Oil will enjoy a well-earned day off Saturday, kick back in the Motel in Minny, before facing the Wild in the final game on their current three-game trip Sunday night. Does
Steve MacIntyre or Zack Stortini draw back into the line-up for this game? We'll have to wait and see.
Edmonton returns home following Sunday's tilt to face the defending Stanley Cup champs at Rexall Place on Tuesday night.
Refreshing to be able to pen something posiitive for a change!
Full props for the boys in copper and blue tonight.
