MacT is my coach!
Prior to tonight's Edmonton Oilers, San Jose Sharks home game, Oilers' owner Darryl Katz gave Oilers Head Coach Craig MacTavish a stay of execution, in a text message to the Oilers' flagship station, CHED Radio.
Katz allegedly text messaged Oilers' colour man, Bob Stauffer, coming to the defence of his club's embattled bench boss.
MacTavish has been under intense media scrutiny the past few days, as his team seemingly continues to squander another post-season appearance, and thus another season.
With five games left in a terribly disappointing season that has gone south more than north, Katz's message to his broadcast crew is undoubedly a last-gasp effort to keep the vultures at bay, while his team struggles to get back into the 2008-09 play-off picture. The message was also directed at his players – MacT is coming back – you have five games to prove your worth to him!
Frankly, I had high hopes when Katz took over the helm of the club, that things would get better, before then got worse.
If that text message was authentic, tonight, those feelings have dramatically changed. After much patience, over years of defending the process during MacT's tenure, I am now convinced, more than ever, that the time to make a coaching change is now.
If the owner won't fire him, which is utterly baffling at this point, then MacT should resign immediately following the conclusion of the regular season.
It's the dignified thing to do!
