An extremely large lady is clearing her pipes down on Wayne Gretzky Drive folks!

The Edmonton Oilers may not be mathematically eliminated, but for all intents and purposes, they're done, following a crushing 5-3 defeat to the visiting Anaheim Ducks.

And not unlike Head Coach Craig MacTavish, I have little confidence left in this year's edition of the copper and blue – or its bench boss, for that matter.

That beeping sound you hear isn't the Zamboni backing up at Rexall Place, but rather the moving trucks rolling into MacT's driveway! The proverbial writing is on the wall for the nine-year Oilers' coach. He knows it as well, listening to his post-game tonight, MacT sounds mentally spent, ready to throw in the towel on this team.

Forget about feeling sorry for yourself, Craig, on the heels of a failed stick measurement of Teemu Selanne. The Oilers didn't lose by an inch – they lost by a mile!

If there was any doubt about the future of the team's coaches, I believe they've fully become solidified after tonight's tilt, regardless if by a major miracle, they do squeak into the post-season.

In a "must-have" game, Edmonton again failed to cash in on most of their golden opportunities, failed to establish a forecheck for any length of time, failed to match the intensity of its opponent for a full 60 minutes, failed to make life miserable for their Rexall guests.

Down the stretch, other than temporary glimpses, the Oil have been lucky on occasion, average at best, posting a record of 5-6-4 in the month of March.

The predictability of netminder fatigue has become reality, as starter Dwayne Roloson, playing in his 33rd consecutive game, looked mortal tonight, after single-handedly helping his team to remain in the hunt.

Edmonton remains stuck in 10th spot in the Western Confernence, three points back of the eighth playoff spot.

With five games remaining, Ales Hemsky and company will have to suck it up and prepare to host San Jose on Thursday and Vancouver on the back-end of Hockey Night in Canada.

The pain and disappointment of the 2008-09 campaign will soon be over Oil fans.
