Should Pittsburgh Be Looking To Extend Bonino And Daley Sooner Than Later?

I do not believe the Penguins should be looking to do so for either player but for different reasons than you might think.

I like Nick Bonino and if the Penguins could lock him in around 4M per year I think that would cement a damn good top three centers for years to come. His asking price is probably going to be closer to 5M per year and that would be pushing it for the Penguins. The good news is that the team doesn't have to make a decision right this moment and they shouldn't.

That damn expansion draft thows a wrench in the potential plans of signing players this upcoming offseason. Nick Bonino is a pending UFA. There is no need for Pittsburgh to sign Bonino early. Signing Bonino to an extension before the expansion draft would only force Pittsburgh to use one of their protection spots on him. The better course of action would be to leave him unsigned until the expansion draft is over and potentially have a "gentleman's agreement" to sign after that nonsense is over with. The Las Vegas franchise isn't going to take a pending UFA as one of their draft choices which is what Bonino would be if Pittsburgh waits.

The Trevor Daley situation is a little bit different. There are some variables that need clarity before the Penguins commit to him for more years. We need to see where this Derrick Pouliot situation is headed. If he gets into the lineup and plays well there really isn't a huge need for Daley moving forward. If Pouliot doesn't pan out or is traded they will have to evaluate their big picture and figure out if they want Daley to stay past his current term.

All in all I would not sign either player early. There are too many things that need to play out first.
