Penguins salary cap situation

News yesterday had the salary cap settling in that 80M range for 2018-19 which is always good for the teams that spend to the cap. The Penguins are one of those teams and will definitely need the space to keep the status quo.

I played around with Cap Friendly’s website to see what the Penguins cap situation would look like with some rough estimates of future player salaries using Matt Cane’s predictions as a base. The biggest key for Pittsburgh will be signing their RFA players

I have Bryan Rust getting 2.5M per year while Matt’s model has 2.2M. I have Sheahan at 2.0M while Matt has him at 1.8M. I am using Matt’s estimate of 1.7M for Oleksiak and Daniel Sprong at 800k. If we have a cap of 80M this is what the team would look like with no other moves

You have a full team with 2.7M in cap space which is a nice place to be. Obviously, the RFA signings in this blog are not going to be exactly what happen in real life. I’d like to think that I’m in the right ballpark though.

You get rid of that Matt Hunwick contract somehow and you have 4.9M in cap space to play around with.

Derick Brassard at 3.0M is a great value and a big reason why the Penguins had to part with the assets they did. The other main component was the fact he is was not a rental player. This year upcoming year is a major part of the trade value and I personally wouldn’t be looking to move on from that contract unless at team really bowled the Penguins over with an offer.

The Phil Kessel rumors still linger and that is another 6.8M which seems to be in play right now.

For now the Penguins look like they can move forward with the positive parts roster they finished with last year while staying under the cap with a little bit of space. It’s not the worst place to be, far from it. Although, that doesn’t mean Jim Rutherford is content with that. Hint, he’s not.
