The Penguins were able to pick up another two points after defeating the Florida Panthers by a score of 4-3. Sidney Crosby was on the prowl all night long and was able to showcase his cat like reflexes around the net. He finished with two goals on the night with a number of dangerous chances that didn’t end up in the back of the net.

Sidney Crosby barely missed scoring with a one handed backhand shot when he was on break towards James Reimer that was reminiscent of the successful one he pulled against Buffalo. He did end up scoring on this outrageously good tip

Patric Hornqvist did a lot of things you would associate with Patric Hornqvist against the Panthers. He scored on a net front scramble as he overpowered the other Panthers in the area to shovel the puck in. He also ran over James Reimer for a goaltender interference penalty which prevented the Penguins would be goal from counting. He also had a lapse of judgement in the third period when he caught an opponent up high in the head in what should have been an interference major, but ended up being ignored. That was a big no call and definitely impacted what could have been for the Panthers who were pushing play for most of the night. Hornqvist deserves a suspension. It was a bad play.

Pittsburgh gave up 46 shots to the Panthers. Matt Murray had to make 43 saves for the victory. It is one shy of his career high of 44. He had a .935 save percentage on the night and was able to thwart the Panthers final surge at the end of regulation.

Olli Maatta has five points in his last five games. This is a really nice start for the former first round pick that has been battling consistency issues the past few years.

Carl Hagelin has one assist so far on the season. Right now he’s quite an expensive penalty killing specialist. He is going to have to start contributing some offense or that 4M cap hit is going to have to be aggressively shopped. It might have to be shopped anyways with Bryan Rust’s next contract looming. He’s building a case to get paid close to 4M based on how his season has started.

Greg McKegg scored his first Penguins goal and it was a really nice one. The Penguins penalty killing forecheck was aggressive and took advantage of a flubbed pass in the neutral zone. Tom Kuhnhackl fended off Keith Yandle nicely and McKegg smoothly finished off the play

Pittsburgh will head to New York City to face the Rangers for the first time this season on Tuesday.
