I saw something on my Twitter feed this evening that I thought was worth passing along.

Here is a new perspective on the Shane Doan hit that has knocked Kris Letang out of commission:

*NSFW language in clip*

It really shows how violent a hit like this actually is. It also shows how absolutely unnecessary it is.

Pause the video at the very start of it. Look at the focus of every player in the background. The puck is long gone and hitting Letang has nothing to do with an actual hockey play.

Doan claims he didn't want Letang to pass him by and get up ice. It is a ludicrous excuse.

I'm sorry to those people who think these hits still belong in the game, they don't.

During my competitive playing days I would have attempted to lay the same exact hit that Doan did on Letang, but we didn't know any better in the 90's/early 2000's. I was taught to hit the opponent so that he never wanted to go back and retrieve the puck ever again. It was violent, I bought into it, I executed it.

What was once the standard cannot be anymore. We know so much more about the human body and the human brain. The idea that you have to "finish your check" is dated. If your hit doesn't serve the purpose of gaining puck possession then it isn't worth it anymore.

If you are in the camp that says Letang should be practicing "heads up hockey" and those hits should remain in the game you are part of the problem. The idea that somebody could have a thirst for that kind of violence watching hockey as opposed to the desire to watch a player like Letang do his thing on a nightly basis is completely baffling.

But hey, Doan said he was sorry, he's an honest player.
